Post by Ralph »

Ik not quite new but new to me,
maybe not quite in keeping with the moderner shuff on here.

Well the scooter now as 2 friends to share it's garage with though from very different times one this one is a 1945 NG Ariel 350 the other a 1946 Ariel NH Red hunter twin port 350 single both have been standing for about 20 years and will need some recommitioning but are in better condition than you would expect, they came in a job lot which included of all things 2 Bickerton folding cycles.

The red un as canvas panniers they both turn over nicely with lots of compression tanks need a clean out
new oil and the mags may need sorting out but I expect they will then run.

Remember those will both have cast iron valve seats bud, you'll need some 'octane improver' will most likely run after a good spray of electrical cleaner on the contact breakers

Just looking round them at the mo checking things, tanks need a clean out "stale fuel doesn't it stink"
but the black one still as a good spark last ridden in 1986 though the mag dyno were always better
than the later magnetos.

While at University I had an Ariel KH 500 twin of slightly later vintage. It was a pleasant bike to ride until a Mini van driver torpedoed it amidships pulling out of a side turning. Wrote off the bike because the gearbox was cracked among other things. I still have the scars of the encounter fifty years later but ,thanks to the steel clutch cover taking some of the energy by deforming, my left foot is still usable even though not quite perfect. I hope you can hang on to the Ariels because in that era they were still a truly independent manufacturer with some decent designs and manufacturing quality a bit better than the more commonplace makes. The bikes you have were also developed over the next decade into the famous trials bike ridden so successfully in competition by Sammy Miller.

The twin was the Huntmaster later ones were fitted with the BSA engine, the red one was likely made a civilian model but
the black one the NG could have been intended for military use but the end of WW11 ment lots were civilianised and never
got to the military.
