Suzuki quality/corrosion resistance is a big joke,do not buy a Suzuki and expect it to resist the elements.I would look for a cheap as chips Honda engined 250 scooter,a Piaggio Hexagon would be great as a winter "hack"

I remember reading old posts about poor Suzuki finish and corrosion resistance, and cast wheels being replaced under warranty etc. I don't really subscribe to Suzuki having a poor finish, a lot of problems are owners not taking preventative measures. I've owned both 400 and 650 Burgmans and used them during six of our British winters and both scooters weathered them remarkably unscathed. No rust, no furred up alloy, and no corroded wheels.

I've never used ACF 50, I spray the Motorex and SDoc anti-corrosion stuff I've used for years on vulnerable alloy and paintwork, and made the effort to hose down the scooter every time I took it out on roads that had been salted, even if it was dark, I was tired, hungry, or downright knackered. Then I'd dry it as well as I could with my leaf blower before pushing it back in my garage.

I do exactly the same with my Silver Wing in winter, with the added bonus that it's a lot easier to clean than either of the Burgmans.

ran a 51 plated burgman for four years

never had any rust problems at all

finish and reliability was the best ive ever had on a bike

Mine was new last December and I clean it every week,I don't commute but do ride if not freezing/icy.Bolts holding rear suspension corroded,had to have new front discs on warranty and the retaining pins were seized and had to be drilled out.I like the Burger and I buy new because I keep for a long time so will be bunging stainless bolts on where I can,would buy a stainless exhaust if one was available.I have a forty year old Honda that looks newer than the Burger lol. But it has never seen rain/salt.

And would add that I use copper grease on all stainless fasteners

**** copper grease**** not the best thing to use on stainless, use Ali paste you can get it in a spray can now.

Copper grease is fine on stainless as is Aluminium grease or any other anti seize compound.Copper for me as I have a large tin of it lol.

My Burgy 400 K8 is a big scooter with loads of storage. It can store a 2XL helmet, a 3XL jacket and 38x36 trousers (with all the armour) under the seat. The glove box can hold a rolled up waterproof/windproof walking jacket too. It also has two ashtrays with lids which can also be used to hold glasses, alcohol wipes, MaccyD loyalty cards and a few pens etc. Ride-wise it's soft-ish and can be adjusted. I'm a tall fella but any big jars go right up my spine because I always ride it feet-forward. If the backrest's removed the seat is massive. Weather protection is good. Mine has the standard (narrow) screen which is perfect for my height but the rain does hit my shoulders and upper arms. It has weathered well but the previous owner had really looked after it. This particular Scoot ain't fast/exciting nor refined but it's comfortable and looks ok for its age. It's very hilly down here and it does ~15 miles on 1 litre of fuel.

P.S I've not had much luck with reliability. Knackered coil and then the Crank shaft nut undid itself at 70mph... Sending the variator tearing into the crankcase.

Thanks for all the really good advice everyone.

I will probably just stick with the Silverwing on Balance and get some rims if possible.

And all the info etc is really interesting too.

Just need to sort the small starting issue. Ordering that part today hopefully.

I had hoped a Burgman 400 would be easer on my spine and neck etc with the disc issues.

I think a 650 one would but so heavy. I do need the low seat height too.

Its strange but the odd hour or two of scooting is often about the only thing that brings my BP down to about 160 ish. Its usually around 190 odd even on tabs etc.

Might try a bit of meditation over winter ? may work and cheaper than a 2nd bike and just the odd silverwing jaunt too with the hose ready for afterwads.
