My dad c1974

Post by smeghead »

Now I know where I get this need for two wheels from! This is my dad back in c1974. He's got a new moped and he's given me his old one, a Garelli Bi-Matic. Note the stylish helmet and protective overcoat and glove combo! Sadly dad passed away 16 years ago and I miss him every day, I cannot listen to The Living Years without tearing up.

He looks like a nice man. My Dad (also long gone) used to ride his Bantam in a Gaberdine mac and beret with a big pair of leather gauntlets. No health and safety police in those days.

My Dad used to ride a Honda 50 with a big screen while smoking a roll-up!
Paddle harder. I can hear banjo music!

Ah yes, riding in the sixties and seventies, remember it well no helmet needed by law but, a flat cap was no protection. Most stuff came from the ex Army and Navy stores, gauntlets that rubbed your hands raw, and I had a Trawler mans Mack to keep me dry. 6 volt systems, hand signals only and some cobbled roads, no give way signs, only Halt at Major road ahead. Cars with Trafficators ( little hand signs that popped out of the door pillar) and cyclists used the roads and obeyed all traffic laws.

I remember watching Jim Redman and Bill Ivy racing on their works Hondas at Oulton Park back in the 1960s. The sound of a 250cc six-cylinder on open pipes made quite an impression..............
