+1 with Mr Greyerbeard on this one. They should all be recalled tonight...
Have you been in touch with Yamaha UK/Europe yet?
Did the dealer show you what had broken on the old shock...? How much weld was on the collar and how much should be on it,
duff robot i spose.

What is really worrying is that the replacement failed as well, suggesting that its not just a duff one, but a whole duff batch - either due to a bad design, or a badly engineered manufacturing process (someone failed to program the robot properly).

ooops thats not a good sign for things .they're major f-ck ups for yamaha. or are these one of those built for yamaha somewhere cheaper . like the RD350R i bought , made in brazil. and the handling was so bad i even took the bike back to ask the mechanic to take a look. but he said nothing wrong ??? not what you would expect from an RD . they were ace i'd had a genuine japan RD350 YPVS . an that thing was awesome ..
Good friends don't let you do stupids thing alone .

OK, lets put to bed the panic I unintentionally started. The collar is not welded it transpires, but is made to be dismantled to renew spring as was demonstrated to me today on good shock, after Yam got back to dealer yesterday (and bollocked them for ordering a pair as they are not matched). The first failure was returned to Yam UK as an unusual warranty claim. Seems I may have been too heavy handed and should hold spring whilst turning, (well put that in the manual then). The spring unloaded at force and distorted the collar making a repair no good.

Having worked in a BMW Bike service dept. I am a bit surprised at all this. Checked my old Xmax 400 at dealer and if I use some force I can pivot the strut below the collar.

I am not putting any fault on dealer on this.

New bike or not, i would buy some good British Shocks i would..
Sounds like a cock-up on the design dept that does...and no You did not do any thing wrong
and hope you told Yamaha UK of that Fact. Not in the book to hold the spring so Yamaha cock-up
in Law....You want a pair of shocks that do not put your life in danger i hope you told them that
also...! So if the spring unloaded with enough force to unseated/distorted the collar then it defo has a design
fault...Screw Yamaha UK i would email Japan..

Most small Yams (including Xmax 300 and 400) are made by MBK. Tmaxs still come from Japan I believe. Not sure if Yamaha are making any scoots in the far East, like the Honda PCX which comes from Thailand.

I think the Nmax is from Thailand. Sure I read that somewhere.

The back page of the X-Max 400 handbook does state MBK Industries France. I know its branded as an MBK Evolvis in Europe! Was down at the dealer today and my machine is sat in the showroom with its sold ticket and the optional extra heated grip fitted. But with the snow due next week not sure when I will be picking it up!
