Seriously I will not return to that forum until he's gone it's a waste of my time reading through the drivel

On the car tyre v motorcycle tyre thing -
Motorcycle tyres have a narrower footprint or “contact patch”. On its own this will cause it to wear much faster than the wider contact the car tyre has.

While I agree about the drivel, it's fun to pretend he's the Duracell bunny though

Just looked re Smaug, his last visit was .... Thu Nov 09, 2017 .... probably in hibernation as it's not the 'riding season' yet ;)

That tallies with the findings of the 'Darksiders' on SilverWings, they favour 155/70-13, caution is recommended though as apparently there is a difference in the sealing bead between tubeless tyres for cars & bikes

For the same nominal size, car rims/tyres are specifically made under size to try to prevent car tyres being fitted to the motorcycle rims which are slightly oversized,.
Plus bikes have a wider bead seat has a taller bead hump.

Putting over 100 psi into a tyre to force a bead to seat is pretty dangerous, it can blow a piece of rim through your skull.

I’d be more concerned about the stability problems that made the laws, regs, spec change to be the way they are - but the Americans are very fond of darksiding.

Presumably 'cos they don't go round corners very much! How on earth do you try and corner on PTW with a square profile car tyre? :o :o

In my opinion they handle like crap

But the square profile isn’t as bad as they look on corners. With a lo wish air pressure and soft sidewalks they tend to pull the tread under the bike and leave a reasonable amount of it on the road (due to camber thrust)
Usually increased continuous counterstear is needed because the bike’s geometry becomes messed up and the tyres are no longer acting as a matched pair.

The trouble is that once somebody makes it around the corner and doesn’t crash they announce to the world that darksiding is safe and go on the attack with anybody who says otherwise.

The thing is - that was never the problem.
They are more prone to instability so a good upset can create a problem when normally the bike should recover (road joints, minor impacts etc)

For anybody who wants to experiment at their own risk:
Fit a car tyre (illegal on UK roads)
Slacken off the headstock until the stearing starts to wobble travelling in a straight line. Switch back to the bike tyre and notice that the wobble is no longer noticeable.
Reset the headstock.
Which one is more prone to wobble?

It gets pretty complicated with lots of elements, more than most people can be arsed with but I work in dynamics so I have to learn/experiment with this stuff.

I have limited understanding of dynamics & I doubt I have the brain power to get further than I am at the moment, hence why appreciate & respect your replies bud icon_thumbs_up.gif

The answer to MrGrumpy's question "How long is a piece of string?"
It's twice as long as half its length. :D :D

Fucking excellent

Along the lines of :-
The pessimist says 'it's half full'

The optimist says 'it's half empty'

The engineer says .....................

It's twice the size it needs to be
