Hi recently cleaned up the rear caliper on my Silvering.
Its been in out, and all about. grease every which way but loose in the right places.
New Pad pins, other two pins all greased and free Pistons are greased and free.
Then had new EBC pads put in too, then all re checked and regreased etc etc.
Absolutely everything that should move is free and easy.
But its still doing the oddest sytem lock ups if you will.
The brake lever feels wooden right forward and the pads are very tight against the disc and dragging big time.
Kick the caliper a few times, it frees off and the lever feels right again too.
Just hoping somene else has had a similar event/s.
Or has a rear caliper for sale as might be worth bunging another one on.
Its going to be seeing winter later in the year so needs putting right.
Thanks Mark.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Is the metal backing on the pads tight in the caliper? had a few that needed a rub with a file.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Yes its the rear brake pads binding when in the mood, and how !!! The parking ones are fine though they are getting close-ish too.
It was doing this before the new pads went in too. Tried all the clean ups etc before the new ones landed.
New ones are SFA196 EBC organic pads, and feel good when its OK.£10 delivered off ebay and right.
The metal backing plates are all on fine etc, and all pads seated right where they slide etc.
The brake appears to work OK fine then suddenly decides to lock/ bind when it feels like it.
Its an odd one I`ve never come accros before.
Many Thanks Mark.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Hi
Old rubber hose degrading inside and stopping the fluid returning, had it happen a long time ago on a really old hose.
A long shot I know but worth considering!
Cheers

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Hi Thanks, all helps, though it went back up fine when we fitted the pads.
The brake lines are 11 years old but seem OK.
Thanks Mark.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Long shot but it might be the piston seals getting old and not draggin the pistons back in when the lever is released.
PITA I know cos it means a full strip down, but not much more hassle than a new second had caliper.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Ah right, sounds possible.
Shame I just missed a 2011 caliper too as would of been handy.
I`ll see re the hoses and the seals next time around the bike if I can.
Best Mark. Thanks.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
Well Buggering Buggeroids etc etc.
Got a rear caliper off a newer bike, great order and like new Honda pads, just under £60 posted, from Poland !!!!
Very pleased with that, so popped her on and re bled the system through with new fluid etc.
Seemed good at first but a few miles later same thing, locking up and dragging on the rear disc and the lever feeling like wood etc.
Kick the caliper a few times it frees off again excatly as before.
We are absolutely stumped !!! But we do now 100% know its not a cailper issue oddly.
At least the honda pads are worth a good £30 as £40 new so thats something.
Any thoughts or ideas or suggestions please. Getting seriously stressed with it all.
Many Thanks Mark.
PS put new ebc pads in the front while on, £10.50 delivered ebc 281`s thats OK thankfully.

Re: Rear Brake Oddity ?
A few years back I had a similar problem on the Aprilia Atlantic 500 where one of the front brakes was binding. After trying various things such as "exercising" the calipers I eventually took the pistons out carefully & cleaned them. They had a black deposit made up of a mixture of brake fluid & dirt I think, & it took a while to very carefully remove it all. After doing that I reassembled it all & it worked fine.
The other possibilities I can think of are the delay valve or the master cyclinder.
