Oil Change intervals ?

Post by XP500FUN »

Hi, I was looking at a very nice sym 300 on ebay, just for fun I assure you.

But I got a bit of a shock when it said serviced at 8000 and 15000. I assume it was also done at 600 or so on initial service.

Though myself I would do it again at 1200 ( after the 600) or 1500 then 3K. Then roughly every 3-4K at most.

On 125`s or smaller bikes I would probably do it every 1200/1500 anyway as a rule.

My Cousin used to do his CB250RSA single Honda every 1K with the daft no bearings cam.

On cars etc, I usually try for 6/7K with Fully Synthetic.

What do others do scoot or bike wise.

I tend to do 3.5K after an oil and filter, then just the oil until a further 3, then both again.

But now the Silverwing is at 22K, I was thinking of going 2.5K after both then 2K just oil. So effectively 2 changes of oil and one filter every 4.5K

Also toying with the idea of just using cheaper car typre 5w40 fully instead of Motul 10w40 semi.

Best Mark.

Some folk will endorse what you propose others will say your wasting both money and resources - personally I change the oil more often than the maintainance schedule

Oil Change intervals ?

Post by Pukmeister »

I recently did my Tmax 500 Mk3 because it told me to in the display at about 3000 miles. I was surprised as I bought it from Yamaha with a fresh service a year ago, so I presume every 3K is normal?

I bought a service kit for £48 including Silkolene 10W40 semi synth, all filters and new spark plugs.

Over-servicing any bike won’t hurt (except maybe your wallet slightly.)Under-servicing almost definitely will.

There can be a difference between servicing and changing oil. You are supposed to change Tmax oil every 3000 miles (which seems a bit often, these days), but services are every 6000 miles. Filters are supposed to changed every 12,000, but I have had several that have rotted through before then!

No engine is going to suffer from running on clean oil, change it frequently if that's what you like doing.

Oil Change on the XMax400 is 3000 miles, with a filter every other IIRC.
On the '15 SH125 Oil Change is 5000 miles, but I do it every 2500 miles - like the older spec model.
Currently using 10w30 Castrol Fully Synth Motorcycle Oil... but will 'prolly go to 5w40 Halfords Fully Synth M/C oil like I use in the XMax when I have used the last of the Castrol in 2 more oil changes...
Have often been tempted to go Fully Synth Car Oil as no clutch and gears in the scoot... but the savings aint huge in the scheme of things and scoots are higher revving etc compare to cars...
Gear Oil I use the Halfords 10w40 Motorcycle/Scooter Gear Oil in both scoots... and change it every other engine oil change...
