I had a letterbox screen on my ST1100, it was an OEM Honda part for the police bikes. I think that it's main function was to stop the turbulence generated by the bigger wider screen, with the slot closed the rain swirled around behind the screen. It was a lot calmer with it open.

Some Honda Gold Wing screens had a vent in them, mainly the 1500 one I think.
