Running in of new engines

My car, as do many makes of newer cars, even records when I check the oil. So in warranty if you never check the oil and your car suffers an engine problem due to shortage of oil, you're stuffed! It tells technicians how it's been driven too providing a full history of any abuse.

Interesting video. Very glad it makes the point that not all engines are suitable for fast break-in. Never a truer words spoken!

How does it know that???

The ECU records information from sensors in and around the engine, in the KAM (keep alive memory). Every time I take the dipstick out of the engine it trips a sensor which is recorded in the ECU. The car records loads of info in-between services in case the techs need to access it. Many bikes do too! My car actually always checks it's own oil too each time I start the engine when on level ground.

My mate took his BMW R9T in for its first service not long ago. He was well pleased with the power of it before he took it in but when he got it back it was like a different bike. Much more power. According to him, they are programmed from new in a 'running in' mode and this is removed after the first service. He was well pleased with his surprise bonus horses.

I had a KTM which was the same. However, I couldn't see any difference on my 60 mile ride home and when I phoned them they told me that they had forgotten to remove the restriction!
