Re: is this a 2 stroke
are we talking hercules wankel. 300cc ? The engine was an air-cooled single-rotor Wankel designed by Sachs as a snowmobile engine, that produced 27–32 hp (20–24 kW) at 6,500 RPM. The rotor spun about the frame's longitudinal axis , with power taken to the transmission through a 90° bevel gear.
Fuelling was originally supplied by a 32 mm Bing carburetor. An electric starter with backup kick starter was standard.
Gasoline had to be premixed with two-stroke oil until 1976, when 199 more units were produced with automatic oil injection
LATER AFTER STOPPED PRODUCTION THE TOOLING WAS ALL SOLD TO NORTON. WHERE THEY TOOK ON THE ROTORY ENGINE DESIGN AN IMPROVED IT A LOT ....even though the engine never took off in production bikes. an sadly they stopped making them.

Re: is this a 2 stroke
Norton did indeed improve the Wankle engine. Despite racing in the TT and MotoGP where it was successful the ACU and Norton could not agree on the engines cubic capacity hence the cessation of production. Mazda briefly made a small 2 door sports coupe using their own Wankle engine but the high cost and short life of the Rotors tips soon brought this to an end.

" Mazda briefly made a small 2 door sports coupe" ?? I don't think a 45 year production run and almost 2 million cars, including winning the Le Mans 24 hour , is briefly by any stretch of the imagination. Dogsbody

"After a 45-year production run, Mazda Motor Corp announced that the latest edition of the Mazda RX-8 will end production in June 2012. The Japanese automaker ... introduced its first rotary engine car in 1967 and is the only automaker in the world that makes rotary engine vehicles, once the darling of the automotive industry. Such engines have fewer moving parts and are quieter than comparable piston engines but are more expensive to manufacture and consume more fuel. Cumulative sales of Mazda vehicles with rotary engines total about 1.995 million

Re: is this a 2 stroke
Yes, Mazda did definitely sort the Wankel engine out, but I think its still relatively thirsty, and maybe its hard to get emissions down to current and future standards. Its such a clever idea though!!!
Is a Wankel classed as a 4 stroke or 2 stroke? There are certainly approximations of the 4 stroke cycle in its design. Or is the idea of being 2 or 4 stroke just irrelevant for a Wankel?
