Panniers

Any recommendations for a pair of panniers that will securely fit an Xmax?

I’ve got an old pair of Oxford First Time panniers but the Velcro straps are not long enough to fit the width of my scoot. The seat is too wide.

Just recently bought a pair of Givi EA100B panniers. The seat on the Maxsym is really wide and the straps are more than wide enough. Plus they are really spacious when expanded (40 litres each.) They're not cheap but being Givi they're quality.

Meant to say long enough. Whoops!

Thanks for the suggestions.

The givi bags look good. I’ll put them on my wish list.

I hadn’t thought about sewing on longer straps to my old panniers so after a bit of googling I’ve ordered some nylon webbing and velcro (known as ‘hook and loop’, I’ve learnt). Now to dust down the sewing machine from the attic!

I made up saddle bags using cycle panniers from Lidl and the leg from an old pair of jeans. I usd them on the Innova but haven't liked to on the SH300 in case they damage the panels.

If you aren't good at sewing - I'm not - using wide-ish double-sided Velcro strips will do the job if the panniers have Velcro straps already attached; disconnect the panniers from each other, lay the Velco strips over the pillion seat and attach the individual Velcro straps on the bags to it. I used another webbing strap to link the bags, just in case, but never had any problems.

My explanation is not good but you'll see if you actually do it.

I've used the method with both Oxford and Givi panniers.

I bought the Velcro in B&Q.

I'm sure sewing is preferable but my system does work.

I did the same with a set of Oxford panniers and velcro straps (from Tesco's travel luggage section), but I wrapped the velcro joins in gaffa tape to stop them peeling apart.

Your failsafe solution sounds far more elegant than mine. 8-)

How did you attach the extra webbing strap to your panniers?

IIRC both sets had adjustable webbing straps which I lengthened with more webbing and buckles, again from B&Q.
Each set had three 'straps', two Velcro and one plain webbing.
I'll check tomorrow; they are in my storage unit.
