Check your used Bike warranty.........

Had a problem with a used bike I bought from a local bike dealer.
The bike in question is my BMW R1200RT
It started at the weekend when I detected the clutch slip slightly while out on a long trip.
Only had the bike approx. a month and i had only done a shade under 500 miles.
Took it into the dealer for them to look at and they said the clutch was not covered by the warranty....
They class it as a consumable.
What a bunch of clowns......... I don't know why they don't extend it to the engine, because that could be classed as a consumable, it will wear out eventually.........
luckily I have managed to do a deal on a new bike.
It has made me very aware of used warranties, the previous bike I bought from a trader was covered by a full warranty including the clutch.
I will be very wary in the future when buying a second hand bike from a dealer.
You have been warned! :D

Pretty standard for clutch plates to be classed as consumables, it was ever thus.
What type of clutch is it, could it just be out of adjustment?
It's amazing how much a difference a quick tweak with a spanner can make.
Has it had BMW car oil put in it by mistake?

Not all warranties are like that, quite a few 'Full Warranties' cover everything including clutch apart from bulbs, batteries etc.

The BMW has a dry type clutch with hydraulic action so no adjustment, very expensive to replace.........

I just wanted to warn other Muppets to check what sort of warranty they get on a used scoot.
I know I will be looking at the small print in the future!

i fitted a clutch in a bmw bike some years ago a 800cc clutch was a diaphram clutch same as a car ,cost a load for little bearings,
and they come off with a right bang, can actually hurt you if not careful, modern ones may be different

Clutch would be a big job on a R1200RT, it may be the rear crankshaft oil seal leaking, contaminating the single dry plate. Many owners overfill the engine and the seal gives up. Guess how I know!
You are well rid, it was a nice looking bike though, always be wary of independent dealers selling late model bikes, they get them through the trade, a main dealer spots the problem and passes it on in some cases.
