What 125cc

I'm going through a phase at the moment. I have a Burgman 650 and 400, but selling the 400 to get a 125 commuter and easy run about. I also would like my son to learn 2 wheels so hence the 125.

Currently I have looked locally and had offers on the following brand new scooters.
As always, I'm better off selling my 400 privately, hence my selling post on Gumtree.

Honda PCX 125 with choice of colours normally £2600 discounted @ £2400 - No Px - Had a test ride, stylish and good but limited to 100 kph. Low 2500 mile service intervals with valve clearance checks.

Piaggio Fly 125 3v Black or White @ £2220 - Will Px but they have as yet not got back with a firm px deal. Latest engine, 144 mpg and great 10,000 km service intervals.

Yamaha X-Max 125 in White, 2011 MY, normally £3970 discounted @ £3400 no Px. Stylish with maxi-scooter presence. Large under seat 2x helmet storage.
The Yamaha is the dogs doodahs but I'm only 5' 6" and on tip toes with it's high 792 mm seat height.

Cost comes in to it highly but all factors will be considered.

I have considered Sym and Kymco but unfortunately have no major presence in my area.

Your two pence worth is welcome to make me decide?

I did somewhat similar a while back, though prompted by my B650 going pop. I was somewhat limited by the available 125s at the Suzi dealer who had the Big Burger and was happy to buy it in busted state for a winter repair project.

But having had my son sit on the options we went for an SH125, which fit his big feet better than some and I was very keen to get big wheeled scoot.

It may limit underseat capacity but with suitable topbox there's enough luggage capacity and seemed to be easier for him to migrate from a bicycle as same overall balance/feel, though I dare say small wheels would have not been much harder.

I'm impressed by the handling and pothole-resistance, you can sling it around well and I'm far less nervous on uncertain surfaces with 16" Pirellis than I have been on other scoots.

Lots around, cheap parts (even OEM), bulletproof GY6 engine and doddle to work on, it was for sale at 650 pounds ('53 plate with 18k miles) and that's in North London. May not be stylish. modern or especially high-tech and seems overlooked but I've been impressed.

If you would spend £3400 on an Xmax 125 why not add a couple of hundred more for a 250?

Ive just got a Baby Burgman 125 for a second commuter and for my daughter to use on CBT. Now I've got it insured and taxed I've been trying it out. I'm a hefty 15 stone 5' 11" and it shoots along. Accelerates very nicely and so far I've been up to an ,(illegal in the circumstances), near 70mph. The daughter is a petite 5' 3" so she is gong to have the hard word before she is let loose. Great storage and all in all I'm very impressed. Much better than I expected.

Swopping from the Burgman 650 to the 125 and back feels a bit weird.

I know they're not hugely popular with some folks on here, but I had a Yamaha Vity which is 10 horses and a top speed of around 65, with mountains of underseat storage and 2 year warrantee. A snip at around forteen hundred quid as I remember, and more than comfortable enough. It'll be a bit more expensive now, but you should be able to get a "last years model" knocked down from their exorbitant rates from most dealers at this time of the year.

You've got to remember all the advice you get on here is from old people!

If I was a young lad,, I'd be wanting a Gilera runner. When you're young, you don't worry about weather protection,, mpg or whatever.

I definitely wouldn't pick a Vity or even a baby burgman. You don't want to be parked outside the chippy with one of them!
