What to buy?

Post by sirsquiffalot »

Hi guys,

I'm weeks away from my full license and am getting some money together to get a new bike. I should have around £2000. Can anyone suggest a nice bike?

I am currently on a 125 Piaggio x8. I love it but would prefer if I could get to overtaking speeds! I am after comfort and stability but love the idea of large storage!

Cheers

Dave

Dave the normal answer to these questions is each owner recommends their own ride, because that's what they each bought for their own needs. But we're individuals and what one person finds ideal another doesn't.

So you'll get a shortlist but you should wait and when "free" get test rides to pick your own ideal. It would help people to try to fit their suggestions to you're need if we knew a bit more, so:
  • Is it solo use only or regular 2-up?
What is normal distance you cover (commute)
Do you plan longer trips, days out or weekends away or European jaunts?
Why do you want "large storage", will you use it for weekly shopping or other regular need, or just twice a year?
Do you often use Motorways, what speed do you want to cruise at?
    What is your budget?
Are you DIY servicer? If not, do you have decent independent or what brand's dealers nearby?
What is your riding style - aggressive, relaxed, other!

Yes absolutely. Another question might be if you will be doing a lot of traffic busting round crowded roads (eg in London). If you do, having something relatively compact might be ideal.

And yes Mr Poldark, we'll obviously recommend our own rides! A Tmax is a good thing to consider though. It does most things pretty well and 180,000 Italians can't all be wrong. The older models are well sub £2000 and reliability is pretty good.
