I fitted a Malossi to a Mk1, the performance was transformed but the character of the bike was left intact. It was like riding a Tmax how it should be. The engine used a few more revs but stayed right in the torque range and just went really well. However, the Malossi effect was only there up to about 50mph, after that all was back to normal. It just filled that hole in the torque curve. Coming off roundabout was incredible. Howvere, if riding along on steady throttle it's difficult to get the revs up for some real oomph. Open the throttle and the scoot goes, no drama.
The J Costa relies more on the power of the engine, as soon as you go for the throttle you get revs. Performance is amazing anytime anywhere. You twist the throttle you go, the speedo can't keep up. However, this can get tiresome in Town when pootling along at 20-40mph with the engine revving like a 50 'ped....
Take your choice for improved performance with no side effects or extreme performance with side effects.
PS The Malossi was with Road weights and the J Costa is the Evo 2 with Std weights.

My mk1 had - I think - a Malossi variator with the lightest 'race' weights. It was totally insane for overtakes - just twist the throttle and it whacked straight passed dawdlers! I always thought that it ran out of go on the M-way though. With the Malossi there are 2 sets of weights - and you can combine them to give an intermediate setting to match your particular requirements.
Or buy a mk3 - they have got it pretty well sorted as standard.

Another thing with the Costa is the wear on the weights is high. They need replacing every 8,000 miles at £40 odd a pop. A Malossi/Polini with rollers will last a couple of belts before the rollers get flatted. If it's possible to use a Malossi with Dr Pulley sliders it might be better still but I suspect the Malossi/Polini metalwork is not much different to the OEM and that the performance gain is mainly in the roller choice, so maybe a set of Dr Pulleys in the OEM variator might be enough. If not then invest further in the Malossi and try them in that. Go about 4gram lighter than OEM with the Dr Pulleys. The lighter you go the higher the revs.
