Fuel economy Burgman 400.

Went for a ride last Sunday. About 200 miles in all, mainly on A roads. I reset the trip counter before I set off so the fuel consumption display could tell me my average fuel consumption. 77 mpg! I knew the Burgman 400 was economical on a run as I have had one before, but I didn't expect this sort of figure.

How does this compare with others? I do realise that riding style has a lot to do with it.

Hi '58', I can tell you that mine is doing about the same now. It's just 'run in' with 1100 miles on the clock. I've had her up to 85mph on a private bit of dual carriageway and she loved it. Like you I took her for a spin in the week covering 120 miles, and the fuel computer showed 79mpg (17.5 miles per litre)!! Could barely believe it. This was a mixture of 'A' & 'B' roads at between 50-60mph and dual carriageway for 27-28 miles cruising at 70mph. Truly one of the very best bikes I've ever owned, and it was brilliant fun too.

Only had mine a week, and on second phase of running it in (6000 - 6500rpm). I know that I havn't given it any stick yet but been up to 70mph on motorway which is maximum for running in and I would guess its doing around 70-75mpg, which is good. Will be putting Givi (52 litre) topbox + Givi Airflow screen on next week, which hopefully won't make too much difference.

The fitting of a large Givi top box increases the mpg slightly, most likely due to smoothing out the "Vortex" behind the rider.

Could be.
With a good aerodynamic front fairing the top box might be acting the same way as the lip on a "Kamm tail". It gives the airflow a definate break away point which makes things less chaotic. In simple terms you get a travelling bubble of bike/rider/air and the airflow treats it as a single block and flows more smoothly around it.

An update. Went for a gentle ride from Wolverhampton to Bridgnorth yesterday. Just over 40 miles. 80.3 mpg. My record so far. And one I'm not likely to beat.

Those mpg figures are good but not much different to many 400 scoots, if ridden "sensitively".

My X8 400 averaged over 70 and did 90+ on a gentle country X9ORC rideout to Bury St Edmunds, I think Carmen's Xevo (same engine) did better still.

£15 a week gets me to work and back for a week, just shy of 150 miles. Works out at 60/63 mpg....I tend to ride in "briskly" and more gently on way home. The motor is 12 years old.

We ride two-up most of the time and average 68 mpg on our 2000 Y model. Just changed back to 21gram rollers (in preparation for our holidays) from the 28 gram ones so it will be interesting to see if mpg changes?
