Honda Smartkey keyless ignition problems

Post by SOOTYGULL »

I have recently got a Honda Forza 125 which has the keyless ignition - the Ignition Switch looks the same as the one on your SH300i.

It is still foxing me though and wonder if anyone can shed some light for me.

First the bit I can get to work:
  • I finish riding then move the ignition switch to the 0 (OFF) position
  • I walk away
  • I return
  • I press the ignition switch and the ring turns blue
  • I move the ignition switch to the I (ON) position, start the engine and away I go
Next the things that don't go according to plan:
  • I finish riding BUT by mistake I leave the ignition switch pointing to the SEAT/FUEL position
  • I walk away
  • I return
  • I press the ignition switch and the ring turns blue
  • I CANNOT move the ignition switch at all !!!!!
Another scenario that causes me grief is:
  • I finish riding then move the ignition switch to the 0 (OFF) position
  • I then move the ignition switch to the SEAT/FUEL position
  • Press the separate fuel/seat rocker switch
  • Lift the seat, get something out and close the seat
  • Again I CANNOT move the ignition switch at all !!!!!
I can usually get round these problems like this:
  • Press the separate fuel/seat rocker switch
  • Lift and close the seat
  • I walk away
  • I return
  • I press the ignition switch and the ring turns blue
  • I move the ignition switch to the I (ON) position, start the engine and away I go
That can often take several attempts !

What am I doing wrong ?

Is the steering lock the issue?
Try moving the bars a bit to unload the steering lock.

Are you on the https://www.facebook.com/groups/1609817985925368/
Hope you find the answers, but it is the modern tech that defeats an old dinosaur like me, so much so when I return to the Maxi Scooter fold (Soon) it will be on a FJS600.

Thanks Dave for that.

I am pre-dinosaur age so am not on Facebook BUT got someone who is to open the link to the Forza 125 Group.

I will have to bite the bullet and join Facebook as they don't seem to have a website.

You probably should - for insurance reasons if nothing else! Its possible that the lock and immobiliser are linked somehow.

You may be ahead of your time, Facebook is now a highly censored place and shadow banning is rife. It's still media, but it's no longer very social since the big censorship drives and the deletion of 'fake news' - which means what they decide it means.

E.g:

Twitter and youtube are headed the same way.

My advice would be to avoid it completely.

Your Honda issue could perhaps be caused by an interaction between the seat or fuel cable and the lock - does the ignition double up as a cable release for anything? Might be worth a look under the plastics and see if something attached to the key barrel is trapped or not routed correctly. Also when it's jammed I'd have a good jiggle of the seat and fuel cap to see if you can perceive any interaction, there must be something doing it.

There may also be a solenoid or cam, in Toyota's (and probably others) you can't get the ignition key out unless it's in park. Not sure what that would be in scooterdom mind.

After 4 years of putting up with my Honda Smartkey ignition switch frequently refusing to move (see first post in this thread) an update !!!!

I wont bore you and go in to detail but this started shortly after picking the scooter up new from Lings 4 years ago.

At first Lings couldn't work out why it wouldn't budge and I guess they thought I didn't "get" Smartkeys but after a few months I persuaded them to get Honda to sanction and investigation.

They said a metal rod in the seat/fuel switch was not settling in the correct position and prevented the ignition switch from moving and that I should jiggle the seat/fuel switch so that it would settle into the "sweet "position and allow the ignition switch to move.

And this I did for 4 years worrying every time I returned to my scooter whether I would be able to start it.

I got so fed up that I asked John Banks Honda in Cambridge to take a look and see if they could investigate the problem.

They warned me that if the ignition switch needed replacing this would be £404.99 but luckily for me they found the seat/fuel switch was faulty which they replaced for £38.94 + £168.94 labour/investigation.

I wonder why the seat/fuel switch wasn't replaced on a new scooter by Lings 4 years ago.

Glad you finally got sorted. Sounds like you should ask Honda to reimburse you, as you raised the issue when the scooter was under warranty, but were let down by Lings.
