I think you may of found some diesel or oil on the road.

Mark, you said it yourself... New Tyres. They will need a good road scrubbing to lose their 'newness', probably another 100 or 150 miles will help.

I've got 2 ways of checking my tyre pressures - one on the foot pump and a dedicated tyre pressure gauge. Neither of them show the same reading. :D
