MOT Questions

My Nexus is due its MOT test on the 26th of April

With this possible throttle cable problem (stuck at 2k rpm at idle) I am in a bit of a quandary about what to do... I am going on Holiday on Wednesday and will back on Saturday.

If I miss my MOT test date because I haven't fixed it in time what would happen?

Could I still take it for MOT... might it pass?

I can't really find anything on the DVLA website that really answers my questions...

If I wasn't going on holiday this would be so much easier damn it

I'm no great expert but I'd have thought if the only issue is too high tickover it won't fail, as long as it revs up and down smoothly without any hint of erratic behaviour then tester may be OK with it.

Of course down to the individual and he may think it's a safety concern.

I'm a car tester and a car would fail as the car has to idle between a set value for the emissions test to be carried out. Not so on bikes BUT whilst not 100% sure, a bike tester MAY be able to refuse to test it if it makes the bike dangerous to ride. Can't see anything in the bike testing manual though so if I was you I'd phone the test station first to ask their advice. If it doesn't make it 'creep' at those revs I'd guess it would be okay but check first.

You won't have any problems if you miss the test date but if it has run out when you go for the test, you are allowed to take a vehicle for test without mot or tax but it must be booked in for test and it must be insured. Good luck.

I don't think they'll be any problem. MOT testers don't 'ride' the bike in any real sense. The brake tests are done on a rolling road - the rolling road does all the work, the scooter engine is off.
As long as you can start the engine on the stand and demonstrate that the lights, indicators, brake lights etc work correctly I would have thought you'd be fine.

I didn't think you had to be able to start the engine to get an MOT pass?
It certainly used to be the case that a bike could pass without making a murmur.

Funky, out of curiousity, does it not want to drive forwards if it's stuck at 2000rpm? Does it not engage the gears and tyres try to turn? If that's the case, they might see it as a problem...

Your Handbook should show you how to adjust the Throttle cable. On the cable is a screw and thread, loosen the screw, then turn adjuster one way or the other to lengthen or shorten the cable. Do this with the engine running. If that is not the problem then adjust the throttle stop screw on the carburretor,again engine running. Personally i always have the MOT done a month before it's due in case there is a problem. I think you are allowed to take a bike for a BOOKED M.O.T. appointment when it is not taxed etc, as long as you are going to or coming from said appointment Try the carburretor adjustment FIRST.
