Engine trouble warning light

Hi fellow enthusiasts,
I'm a recent convert to scooter riding having taken the CBT in June, getting an Xmax 125 and passed my test in November to ditch to L plates. Didn't take long before I yearned for more power and bought a Xmax 250 a few months ago and am well pleased with the nippiness and that I can ride with more confidence on the M25! though not every day. I really aspire to getting a Tmax and think the new 530 looks great especially from the back with the big fat tyre and tail/exhaust.
Anyway back to my question. Sometimes, not every time I ride at about 7000+rpm doing 70 ish the engine trouble light has come on but it has no effect on the bikes performance. I usually park up for 5 mins with the engine off then ride off gently and it'll go out after a few minutes. The bike has about 1600 miles on and I've had it from new. It's had it's first oil change, no other issues. I know I should take it into the dealer in West london to take a look at it and thought I'd leave it until the next service. It's happened about 4 times now and not every time I ride it at speed.

Yes!

I don't know about scoots but with cars, that fault will be logged into the ecu and can easily be read by using the correct diag tool. The dealer should have the correct tool if this is a feature of scoots.

Sounds like a bit of dodgy wiring under stress at high rpm. Best get it checked before said wire gives up at 70mph and you find yourself in Lane 3 without power.

Yep - take it back and get it checked, and noted in case a more major issue crops up later... may just be the bulb or a wire issue, if the light is an LED and other bits start playing up on the dash (maybe just out of warranty) could be expensive, so at least they have a note of it...
Report back any findings or response from the dealer out of interest...

Took it in this morning for the Yamaha workshop to check the diags. They weren't able to trace the cause as the error code 1 is a bit generic so want more time so have booked it in for the day next Tuesday.
It occurs when I run for a stint at 70+ at around 6500rpm. My gut feel is it's emissions or heat related as a loose connection could occur at any speed/uneven roads etc. Maybe it's just telling me to keep it below 70 ! It least the light goes out after the engine's rested for a few minutes.

I was watching a Tv program recently where someone had a new Citren D3 and the same sort of fault was occuring and Citroen had it in 5 times and couldn't trace it but said to keep driving and ignore it and wait for a 'software' fix to become available. After a huge amount of effort and the involvement of Dom Littlewood, the dealer eventually agreed to take the car back and refund all the money paid for it. Hope I don't have to go that far!
Interesting though that none of the Citroen management would return calls and Dom went via their Press Office to get a resolution. Just as well they don't make bikes ... or do they (Peugeot)?

good call - hopefully they will trace the fault, but don't put up with it if they dont... if it was new, you should get a replacement scooter... who knows what other electrical issues may manifest when out of warranty... who is the dealer?

Hi Xmas250Paul, guess you too have an Xmax, cool. Rode it back in this morning to the dealer who are West London Yamaha on the Twickenham Road. I chose them as they are on one of my routes to/from work/home. Previously had a xmax 125 from Lamba in Carshalton who were fine but seems more convenient to use the West London dealer. Hope I don't come to regret it.
They've given me a YBR 125 while the xmax is in so I had to remember how to operate gears .. only stalled twice! What a faff. At least it feels stable on the road, just one of those things you have to work at I guess. My Alpinestars did seem too big to control the gear peg which didn't help either.
I'm thinking of doing a direct access course on a big geared bike this year, just so I can ride anything, but for commuting I think a scoot's best and certainly love my xmax.

Will update when I have some news from the dealer.

West London Yamaha had my bike in the for day and managed to reproduce the fault for themselves and trace it to a faulty oxygen sensor so looks like a happy ending expected.
Part on order and covered by warranty.
Started getting the hang of the geared bike but much more at home on the xmax
