Side swiped whilst filtering.

Post by nexusmaximus »

yeah!...not had a collision for a long time now, but tonight got side swiped by a Range Rover that wanted to overtake a car turning left, so swung out into the oncoming lane as i was filtering past the slow moving traffic. He wacked into me, knocking me into the oncoming lane, and thankfully nothing coming the other way, but kept her upright and kept her under control. Discovered that i couldn't put her up onto the main stand when i stopped to exchange details, and when i got home, it just needed straightening with a hammer. The footpeg bar was bent just enough to prevent it from rocking back to sit properly. Other than that, no other damage, not even a scratch!

Unlucky! But these things happen. At least you weren't hurt!

Hmm. Not sure that's how I'd see that. Just how I got knocked off and it made me reconsider how I filter. Glad that you're not hurt though and great that there is little damage to the scoot. Will it change the way you ride? For me it means that I won't filter past slow moving traffic if there is any chance that some dick might decide to turn right without indicating, or pull into a parking space on the other side of the road without warning. I'm either right over near the right kerb or only filter when there is oncoming.

For what it's worth, my case went to court and liability was awarded 50:50; me for filtering, him for not using correct observation when executing a manoeuvre.

Glad to hear you're okay. Has the driver admitted fault?

He did admit fault after getting out of his Rover like a cock sure little prick. By the end of our conversation he couldn't apologise enough or check that i was ok, and if he'd have indicated then i would have been fine, so being unlucky had little to do with it. It probably won't affect my driving decisions in future, will definitely re-sharpen my hazard awareness, but thankfully i'm not as shaken physically and more importantly confidence wise, as i was after my last off.

The main thing is that you're okay.... You'll have to take it easy for a day or two... Take care squire.

That sounds a bit too close for comfort, glad to hear you are unhurt.

On the other hand Yellowmax's court result sounds a bit harsh.

Most of the time I weigh a filter up and decide it is unsafe so I rarely do it, but I still don't see how a driver can justify pulling out without checking.

What you need now is a sweet cup of tea and early to bed with the wife for some comforting ;)
It always works for me :)
