but if you have had loads...and really want just a work tool... then a scoot is a good move....

i rode down to hastings last w/e on the mayday run with me x8.... i did not envy the bike riders CONSTANTLY clunking up an down the gearbox...but i was same when i was younger.... id never commute into a city ever again on a geared bike...too much hard work clonk clonk clonk....
Thanks all for the superb responses but this one I found particularly interesting as I am in my mid forties and never was a particularly fast rider.I guess I am in my twilight biking years. What really got me thinking is that an SH300 is around £500 more than a CBF500.

I think that the last few posts say it all. I was a young, go-fast motorcycle rider for a lot of years. I never even considered a scooter, although that had a lot to do with the dearth of choices here in the States. With a choice of maxis available now, albeit less of a choice than is available across the Pond, I can get the two-wheel fun, stability on the highways, and economy that I enjoyed with motorcycles in a kinder, gentler way.

I don't want to muddy the water here, but more realistic alternate to SH300, as a manual bike, would be the new NC700S (or X), which has storage space for a helmet equal (or better) mpg and decent comfort.

You can even have an auto (DCT) version, though that'd bump the price somewhat.

Provided you fit the SH300 (I found it very cramped) then it is a capable (and fast) machine and I'm sure you'd enjoy it as much if not better than a CBF500.

And if your a sporty go fast kinda guy ( like me ) they still go fast, I was messing with an Audi TT S line tonight blasting up to 90mph and he didn't catch me :)
I enjoyed using the gears tonight for the first time on the Burg 650 to.
And one thing people forget about scoots, its so much easier to adjust yourself and scratch n itch places, you just cant do that on bikes :)

I never thought I would see the day that I would own a scoot. Always was a sucker for a nice looking machine, then I started looking at scoots via the TAG mag and was after a Gilera Runner, read a review on the new PGO G-Max125, then bought one new. I still have it as my runaround in Ireland. I had to replace it with a get to work tool here in Scotland and went for the SH300 due to it's large wheels and motorcycle feel on the road. I too didn't like flat board step through's, but I have got over that now. I also was never a fan of top boxes, but they come into their own when needed. I would say I have done more miles on this scoot than any other bike I have owned before and I haven't even had it for a year yet.
I wouldn't buy a new one as I think they are over priced, but there are good second hand deals to be had out there.
Now looking at the Vespa GTS 300 as a possible, now that is a lovely flat board step through.

Well for me I started riding scooters at the age of 16 from 2004. I started on a SYM DD50
(due to the fact it cost just £999 while rivals were pretty much twice as much). Then when 17 I
decided to stick with scooters upgrading to a SYM Megalo 125. By then I was a fan of scooters for
there cheap running costs, storage, urban handling, weather protection and comfort.

Naturally being a fan of SYM I set my eyes on the GTS 250 (SYM's biggest Maxi at the time) and told
my self to pass my test so I could own one. Passed my test and ordered one the next day!

The thing is i know there's new cars that can be cheaper than maxi's to run but these cars have naff
performance and are still hindered by there size. I also recently looked up insurance for
a 1992 Lada Riva for myself... £1000!!!!! while my GTS is £150....

I've been riding various bikes since 1970. When i turned 60, I fancied some "modern" technology, and a friend suggested a Maxi scooter. I looked at and tried a (three wheeled) Piaggio MP3 250..... which I bought. Once I'd got over the "mobility scooter" looks (and jokes!) I found it very impressive, Fast enough (for a while), economical, great storage and weather protection....and great fun to ride.
I've now (at 63) gone for a bigger engine, back to 2 wheels (a Piaggio Xevo 400) which does everything I need on the road. I am tempted at times to go for an even bigger engine, but until I win the lottery, I think the 400 is the best all round compromise.
I'm not saying the Piaggio is the best 400, it just happens to be the one I have, and I like it.
Oh, and on the theme of another 'hot' thread.... a HIGH VIZ vest is always good to wear while riding 8-)
