TORQUE Wrench

Post by anonstarter »

Dear Sir/Madam ;)

I don't have a torgue wrench and there seems to be many 'horror stories' about steel bolts cracking aluminium cases etc, so I was looking at buying one.

My Citycom service manual talks of torque values:

Oil strainer cap: 1.5~3.0kgf-m
Gear oil drain Plug: 1.0~1.5kgf-m
Gear oil inspection bolt: 1.0~1.5kgf-m
Oil pump connection bolt: 0.8~1.2.kgf-m

There are many available - the cheaper ones state "torque range of 42-210Nm."

A quick Google suggests that 0.8 kgf-m is 7.84532 Nm - well below the torque range above. :?

I'm hemorrhaging money so I'm trying to find the best value torque wrench that won't be needed to torque tractor tire bolts.

What would you do or what have you done?
Is there one perfect for Scoots/motorbikes that you'd recommend?
Is there one that's less weighty and also great value for money?
Or have you survived this long without one and have the 'knack of knowing'? ;)

As always your comments are invaluble - and thanks for your time. :D

Aldi had some recentlythat were cheap and more than adequate for bikes, maybe you could still find one. TK Maxx had some too but I didn't take a proper look at those.

I like the ones that click at the desired torque. It is an ingenious compact design

The cheapest is better than none.
No-one wants to start drilling out studs and using Easeouts.

I have had two silverline torque wrenches off of Ebay (first one got nicked along with other tools from my garage) it only cost £17 and has a range of 28 to 210 like this one

They do the job, any lower torquing and you should be doing it by hand and what feels secure and not over tightened.

If you want really really cheap, you can pick these up at car-boots for a pound or so. It's hard to see but there's second shaft attached parallel to the handle. the handle bends as you turn the nut (no, really!) and the pointer shows how far along the scale you are.

I've got a Draper 3/8 - 10nm (fink it actually goes down to 8nm) for little stuff from M and P: http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/5397 ... ols/Draper £40.. might find it cheaper elswhere...

Try your local motorfactors / Machine Mart etc... for a Draper or Laser make...

I'd forgotten about those. I used one of them for years before I could afford something a bit decent - never had a problem with it, but then again, there's a not a lot to go wrong.

You will need two torque wrenches to cover all the bolts on a scooter.
Small bolts in aluminium require very small torque.
A lot of torque wrenches available will not go down to those levels
I have two wrenches, the smaller one goes upto 25 lb and the larger one starts at 20 lb (I think) :D
