Re: New 400 Burgman

This morning I went to work on the 400 in the pouring rain. As I was working in Torrington, Devon (40 miles or so) I thought I'd take the mileage up to 600 ready for it's service in Exeter on Monday.

Wet weather is not great for riding in and, when combined with the twisty roads and large steep hills, full on misery was the order of the day. I had my wet weather gear on so I was dry, but the gear still gets wet.

My jacket and trousers hadn't dried by the time I set off for home, but the rain had stopped and the severe gales that blew me around the moors soon dried me out. By the time I got home I had forgotten the shite weather and sat back admiring the filthy scoot.

I'll clean it tomorrow if it doesn't rain. Maybe.

Wuffstuff, very pleased you are getting on so well with the new toy. Did I just say toy? I'll wash my mouth out. The Burgman 400 is a serious bit of kit, and not just equal to a good motorcycle, but well ahead of the big bikes on so many fronts (leaving aside sheer bhp of course). It's a good alrounder and especially good on lengthy journeys. Like you, I'm loving mine too. The power and fuel economy is getting better and better and she just goes so well. I found to start with a slight pain in the backside on those long journeys, but this soon goes as you get used to the seat. I'm fairly tall and adjusted my seat backrest to it's fully back position and I find it really pretty good now, no complaints! There is plenty of room onboard to move about a bit if you need to and this can help as well as you no doubt have found out.

You've got the good bit to come. As she runs in you can use more and more power. It's fun, and frankly surprising just how well these Burgmans go. As a previously big bike rider I've yet to find it lacking in power. Even in the last two days when the wind has been full on, barrelling down the A12 has not been a chore at all. It just does it and laughs in the face of....errrrr... wind! :o Although today, I did slow down to 60mph at one stage for a few miles as the wind was so bad. To be honest, I'd have done the same on my GSX1400 or Vstrom 1000. It just seemed a sensible thing to do. At least cleaning is easy! So get to it tomorrow then enjoy another ride.

Personally I think the likes of the Burgman 400 have plenty power for road use and big bikes have far more than is really necessary.
I remember a time when you could speed with impunity, those days are long gone so why ride a fire breathing tarmac burner?

+ another 1
I couldn't agree more, and I still don't understand how a wearing a rucksack makes your bike go faster but it must because all the sportsbikes use them.

I did a little round up of what is available at the moment and didn't find anything to tempt me off my burgy

Generally I'd agree, 400cc seems to be the sweet spot for power and economy. I do carry a pillion 6 days a week though and find myself wanting a bit more oomph sometimes to get away from the lights and for overtakes.

1st service this morning. It felt tighter when I left the Garage and on the motorway back home it was fine. I have to say that even in the heavy rain and the strong winds it drove perfectly and I didn't feel concerned when overtaking big lorries.

Looking forward to moving at a slightly higher speed now; I was getting bored going so slow. I think 65-70mph on my weekly trip from Devon to Portsmouth tomorrow should be realistically achievable.

Next week I have a trip to London planned. I hope it stops raining - just for a day.
