Time for a newer scooter

Not just yet, as I would prefer to pay cash, but whilst researching I came across these two:


A.....56 plate Burgman 400, 1000 miles from new, £2750 (Lincolnshire)

B....09 plate,Burgman 400, 340 miles from new, £3000 (Derbyshire)

Both a little high for their year but I would say not unreasonable give the lack of miles on both of them

I'd hope to get between £500 - £700 for my current X reg Burgman, 35,000 miles

I'd avoid something with that age and that low miles. Low mileage over time can cause a lot of issues.

Better to look for something that's at least had an oil change each year, if it's not used it's not cared for usually.

Indeed, I was thinking that if these haven't been started and had the engines run on a regular basis, that there could be more cons than pros.

I would e mail sellers and as why mileage is low, brothers just bought a 56 plate car with o ly a thousand miles on it genuine due to ill health of owner,
cars in mint condition
1 would buy a low mileage bike every time ,idomnt think its a issue at all if bikes not been abused,
and considering i dont do a thousand miles a year on my own scooter its only used in fine weather and some times only once a month

I use mine every day for work. But then I do use any chance I get.

I'm not bothered by low miles. It's all about condition. How's the compression? Any signs of dry rot on the various hoses? Whatever the age or mileage, go through the scoot from top to bottom, inside and out. Why pass up a potentially good thing without checking it out? My 2004 Burger only had 12,000 miles on the clock when I bought it last year for the equivalent of 1250 BPS and, with another 300 BPS at the dealer, I've put 10,000 trouble-free miles on her in 13 months.

Considering I got a 2011 burgman 400 for £3600, with heated grips, hand guards and a top box... those seem expensive

I just got £3500 for my 2011 with 5000 miles as a part exchange, so expect the dealer to ask say £4200 to £4500?

I think there is a good chance the prices on those low milers can be shot down a tad. If the bikes haven't been used at all or very very little there is a strong probability the forks seals will start to leak in the first few hundred miles as these do dry out if left standing. Easy to replace though and cheap enough even at the dealers. Engine seals are also likely to leak though. That's a bit more expensive maybe depending on which ones go. Those are really the main risks of buying a stored low miler. So get it cheap and see what happens...if anything. Sometimes they go ok with no seals leaking, but usually, you will need some new seals somewhere.
