Test rides with a private buyer

Post by Funkycowie »

My Nexus is going up on eBay tonight as I have all of next week off work to potter around fixing stuff and being lazy.

It is logical that someone may want to test ride before buying so, do they have to have insurance? what deposit should I ask for? any thing else I should be wary of?

Ride with them or full payment, unless she's very attractive! ;)

If! you can, get a copy of his/her driving licence too.
If they ride your scoot through a speed camera at stupid speed,
And you get a N I P through the post.
You can point the police in their direction. :D

Good idea, just take a photo of the card bit with your phone, should be good enough (if you have a modern phone that is).

All the above.
Driving licence (note driver number)
Full sale amount in cash as deposit
Copy of insurance.

Failing that, take them for a ride as a pillion passenger.
Paddle harder. I can hear banjo music!

I always wondered this full sale amount part... say you're advertising at 1500 but haven't haggled yet. If the prospective buyer comes and you take 1500 from them as deposit, then when they come back from the ride and try to haggle, how do they get the price down knowing that they already showed you they came with full amount in their pocket?

What i mean is when you haggle for a vehicle, you usually can use "i only have 1200 in my pocket, it's all yours if you shake my hand now" kind of expression... In this instance you wouldn't be able to use that expression.

This is what puts me off buying or selling a bike privately.

Don't think handing over the full asking price for deposit pre ride makes much difference. It covers you, and any negotiation can still be done afterwards.
