TMAX Tuning - Variators!

Alright lads. Have had tmax's for the last 5 years - needing a bit more punch!

Has anyone fitted a new variator and what are your views?

I've been told that the J Costa gives more performance than the Malossi, I'd be looking to get a J Costa Evo 2 race variator.

Any ideas on where i can get these reliably and what parts other than the variator and the belt if any i need to replace??

hi, not sure if funkeycowie has uprated to Dr pulleys on his tmax, he used to run them on the nexus... if you go for the j costa welsh scooter parts sell them for around £340 mark...

JCosta makes no monetary sense, pins are £40-50 a go and last about 4000 miles

Get lighter weighted Dr Pulley rollers (15gm) and sliders, they are about £35-40 a go, fit in your original variator and last for over 12000 miles.

Always go for OEM belt they last longer.


As michaelphilips says I have had a JCosta in my Nexus 500 and hated it. I ruined the pins in about 2000 miles, the Athena belt I used slapped against the timing thing too much and worst of all it made it sound like a 50cc moped. I took it off and put the old variator back on with lighter weight Dr Pulleys (28gm - 26gm) and noticed a good difference. With the TMax I have gone even lighter than standard (18gm - 15gm) and she goes like stink without all the fuss of a JCosta.

Agree, I bought Lyn's costa and took it out as I didn't like it. The 15g Dr Pulleys were much better.

Michael - Thanks very much! I'll get the pulleys and give that a bash. Failing that R1K i'll give the 560 conversion a go!

One last question - i've seen footage on You tube of a tmax turbo - skip to 51 secs in. Do we know of anyone who could make this happen in the UK?

Agree, I bought Lyn's costa and took it out as I didn't like it. The 15g Dr Pulleys were much better.
