new owner/site visitor

Post by NLY »

Having just arranged to buy a 2010 AN 400 lo from my local bikeshop, i went online to get an insurance quote from carole nash. This was steeper than i expected so i took a look to see if there was an owners' club, and the first thing i come across on the site is a long multi way conversation about early belt wear in a 400 Burgman. Is this commonplace? I naively thought belt life to be about 12,000 miles. Also seeing the options section what is a BBCode? DO i want to disable it? Or the smilies? As for [img], [flash], or parsing URLs whatever that means, i'm lost. Life was so much simpler (and from the look of things, so much cheaper) in my days as an MZ owner & member of the Staffs & district MZ riders club. Have i made an expensive mistake, or do burgmans normally live up to the generally favourable press reviews?

welcome, lots of info on the burgman 400 on here just use the search engine. They are great scooters, dont be put off, me and other members on here are ex MZRC members , remember when researching on the net you only hear about the problems, not the ones that do thousands of trouble free miles.
Im not a gynecologist, but I dont mind taking a look.

welcome lad, ive been doing some work, general wear and tear really, on a burg 400 with 43,000 miles on it, its had a hard life and neglected by prevoius owners, yet it still goes from a to b with no issues,
dont be put off at all, great hard wearing scoot and easy for diy if you fancy doing it, it will save you money and more of a love affair when doing it yourself
I cant seem to remember.. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.

Thanks to horobags for the re-assurance, and to all three of you for the welcome notes. To michaelphillips: I understand about the savings and the love affair (tho some of mine were unrequited and one was more a love/hate relationship) of doing your own work, but it was because health problems have ruled out most bikes that i'm opting for a scooter this time and i'm not sure that i'm ready to get my hands dirty as often as i used to. thanks anyway

First off welcome and you have not made a mistake. The B400 belt change officially from Suzuki is to be done at 14,000 mile but dependant on you riding style many can easily get 20,000 mile. The Suzuki oem belt is imo expensive at about £160 and I used the quality Gates belt equivalent for only £70 delivered. The only reported common issue is the clutch 'squeel' or 'churp' on take off, where the shoes get glazed. Apparently If you regularly take off with some speed, instead of a sedate start this seems to help and prevent the shoes glazing.

I found this deaf person's maintenance videos for the 07+ B400 in the USA excellent.

Enjoy.
