Ok, first of all thanks for your replies they are exactly what I was after. Second, I must apologise if I have upset anyone. It seems I may have jumped the gun and assumed that the oil consumption issues were widespread, it seems they are more likely to be isolated. My fault entirely for reading google search results and not taking into account the amount of burgman 400's sold worldwide.
Special apologies to gn2 who I was a bit rude to.
I shall keep the burgman 400 on my list and look for a test ride.

The Silverwing doesn't 'feel' big although it's probably bigger than the Burgman400 and heavier, too.

I'm guessing that the OP is referring to the old AN400X/Y models from 1999-2000. When ridden hard these could throw their oil into the airbox via a crankcase breather & if not checked would lead to early demise. I had an X model which did this, although it presented no real problem because I pulled the dipstick out once in a while, and I know of another one that seized because of it. I certainly don't know anything about the later models having oil consumption problems though.

As for the burger using oil, i'm pretty sure that was the early versions when riding at 80 for a sustained period, I had a 1999 model and never used oil and a 2010 model the same, but I don't thrash my rides
