Thanks Grumpy, I must admit I have never found the Mk3 suspension wanting, I just wondered if it could be improved. The rear shock will be well past its best by now, I may send it off to Lukasz at T-Tech suspension in Croydon and see if he can work his magic on it. Failing that, I will replace it with something suitable.
Years ago I had a Yamaha Thundercat 600 which had budget suspension, I rebuilt its front forks and added progressive springs and thicker weight oil and it was like riding a different bike, it went from zero front feedback to feeling like every local road had been resurfaced you could feel everything the tyre was doing through the bars.

That's rather like how my mk1 felt with the Hypepro fork inserts. To my mind, the mk3's forks provide lots of feedback, and the harder you push, the better it feels!Pukmeister wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2024 8:02 am

So Booked for a replacement variator cvt belt and secondary sleeve tommorow . All Genuine Yamaha parts . It goes well but the squeak persists especially at idle and when hot . It revs up too much at low speed , hence the fast acceleration but I prefer the standard set up having had 10 T Max's over the years . Will report back when its done . The handling is very very good with the Olins though

new Belt and Yamaha Variator fitted !! No more screaming 6000 rpm at 24 mph !! So much better . Still a slight squeek but maybe I am overly sensitive now . Goes netter sounds better . Anyone else used a Mallossi variator and like it ?

Ok the mechanic found it was missing a gasket on the transmission cover and the bearings in cover are being stressed because the lack of gasket causes a clearance issue ! New gasket and bearings ordered . Looks like when whoever fitted the mallossi variator did not replace the gaskget , not my dealer anyway . So progress

Don't you just love it when a mechanic who 'knows better' decides that there is no need to replace a gasket, fit a washer, renew an O ring, replace a circlip with new etc etc.
If it was designed to have the parts in the first place (usually by very smart people), it needs them fitted.
Sounds like your Yamaha bike mechanic must be pretty conscientious with good attention to detail and worth using.
I'm going back to a genuine Yamaha primary drive belt at my next service, I fitted a Dayco due to cost and it was a false economy as the thing 'chirps' at idle and even though its only a subtle noise it drives me nuts. I did recently fit a Malossi clutch pack kit and to be fair I can't fault it, plus it was a lot less expensive than the OE Yamaha parts are.
I also tried EBC HH sintered front pads and they are either knock-offs or just need a hell of a lot of bedding in as they are not up to the job IMO, I swapped them for a set of Polini organic pads which have much better feel and more than adequate stopping power.

Ok gasket fitted new case bearings and its all fixed . They put a new CVT belt in as well so now quiet . Runs really well now , I can feel the Ohlins working rather than worrying about the noise . It has a full akro and all the billet bits rear light tidy . The Guy who specced it spent over £18600 on it and rode it 230 miles . Much better with the standard variator as well . and Breathe

Nice one Robbi! Regarding the missing gasket I suspect that was just an oversight by whoever did the job. Quite a few scooters don't use a gasket on the tranny case but the Tmax clearly does. Sounds like you have a really good bike now. Enjoy!
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!
