There is no particular reason while the TMax transmission will be expensive to maintain. You'll need a new transmission belt every 12000 miles (costing £100 approx), though you can probably stretch this a bit. On the Tmax 530, there is also the question of the final belt drive. This probably won't need replacing until mileage gets huge, but could be prone to damage - we don't yet know.
The Integra's transmission probably won't need much servicing, but the chain final drive will. I guess a auto chain oiler would be a good idea. I don't really have any idea how the chain will last - but they aren't cheap when the do (sprockets needed as well, I presume).
The Integra transmission ought to be more efficient than the Tmax CVT - Honda are claiming fantastic fuel economy figures, though the only test I've seen didn't give very remarkable figures. As within anything, it depends on how you ride. The TMax gives me low 50s mpg, though this can be persuaded upwards with gentler riding, but can be worse on high speed thrashes.
The Integra doesn't cut it for me.....no storage, so you'll have to buy a big Topbox and/or faintly useless panniers - all at the cost of several £00 at Honda prices! The Tmax space isn't fantastic either, but the underseat space plus topbox works quite well.
I get the impression that the Integra is dull somehow....whilst all previous versions of the Tmax have been FUN....

I've noticed that. For all the comments about the reliability of the Tmax there seem to be a hell of a lot of threads about problems with itMeldrew wrote:It's also got more than it's fair share of woes as the topics in 'The Garage' show, I was going to go through all 16 pages but when I counted twenty in the first few pages I gave up.MrGrumpy wrote:I get the impression that the Integra is dull somehow....whilst all previous versions of the Tmax have been FUN....

Not so many on the Xevo

I'm sure I'll be flamed to death now.....

Not that I have anything against the Xevo, having had an X8 for a while, but online numbers of reported problems online need to be considered against the total number sold. You'll likely find the number of TMaxs in use, certainly in Europe, is way higher than Xevo/X8.

I'm sure there are more TMaxes sold than the Xevo as Piaggio have carved themselves a terrible reputation (and generally seem to live up to it).poldark wrote:Not that I have anything against the Xevo, having had an X8 for a while, but online numbers of reported problems online need to be considered against the total number sold. However, on this forum there are 5 Xevos and 7 X8s and 14 Tmaxes (if the poll is correct) so it does seem there are a disproportionate number of threads about Tmax problems, on this site anyway.

Depends what a "Problem" is!
The odd electrical fault, speedo plastic sensor failure, a failed fuel pump, snapped belt, timing chain tensioner maybe.
But needing to know a colour code, needing advice about engine idling, where to buy fixings, failed batteries, replacing worn out discs, needing to know the number of rollers in a variator, adjusting a pilot screw (need I go on??)
doesn't count as a problem in my book.

Re: Honda Integra or Tmax 530
What's this pick on Tmax time again??
So Steve had a problem on the way back from France but he's been having belt problems for some time.
And he also does more miles than most of us.
And rtfm agreed with you.
As for reliability, I think it'll compare favourably with most other makes

No, Meldrew, you're missing my point. Now you're talking about forum advice whereas previously you replied to Grumpy implying the Tmax had major problems.Meldrew wrote:Well it counts as a "problem" for plenty of other Tmax owners or they wouldn't have bothered posting in the first place. Think back to when you didn't have the Muppets and other forums to go to for help and advice, what did you do then. In fact it's becoming the sole reason some riders join a forum, you read a first post and it's all about wanting advice for a mechanical or electrical problem, that's given to them and then they're never heard from again.Liam wrote:Depends what a "Problem" is!

Of course people ask for a lot of info for the Tmax because Tmax owners are probably more inclined to add non standard parts.rtfm wrote:I've noticed that. Re: Honda Integra or Tmax 530
My first mark one covered 27k miles without a blip. Liam's mark one which I bought last year was also troublefree and covered 7k miles in less than six months. Mind you both were bog standard as Yamaha intended. Out of all the scooters I've ridden the Tmax has to be the most sorted. Would have a mark three without question...

I think Meldrew and I were just making an observation about out how it looks on this forum.
I don't understand why people get so defensive over something like this, are there Yamaha shareholders here? It's only another bike after all, not a family member.
As for TMax owners being more likely to add non standard parts, that implies to me that the TMax owners must feel that the standard Yamaha ones are not good enough, which for the price of the TMax is shocking

The only mod to my Xevo was the air horn which frankly should come with all bikes to wake up dozy drivers
I will now add the standard disclaimer about not meaning to offend anybody, all comments to be taken with a sense of humour etc etc etc........

Re: Honda Integra or Tmax 530
To steer this thread back to Honda Integra or Tmax 530? Well, Ive found a Secondhand Majesty 400 locally, that has done 83km, for half the price of a new Integra or Tmax 530. So, Im thinking dollars wise, it kind of makes sense if I was to get it.
Im thinking the Maj 400 is a pretty nice maxi scoot, and as the current owner (who is 74 years old and has bad hips) cant ride it. So, he has kind of taken the few thousand dollar depreciation on the scoot. Means in a few years time, I wont lose much money on it, whenever I on-sell it. I think I would also feel better not spending so much money on a new maxi-scoot, with limited funds and all (like most of us).
I might go look at it over the weekend, its about 30km away from my house.
The story of it is. The grandfather went to Thailand last year, and he enjoyed riding around on the small scooters over there. So when he got back home to Australia, he went to the local Yamaha store and bought a 220kg maxi-scoot Maj 400. And he has realised its just too heavy for him and his bad hips.
Ive read a fair bit of about the Maj 400 on various forums. There is heaps of info on the MajestyUSA forum. Anyone know any reason not to get one ? I think the service intervals are fairly far apart, and it seems to be pretty good on gas milage, and a comfortable ride with good brakes.
Thanks
Aaron
