Hi Johnp

Considering the lack of general advice/shared wisdom about the Tmax (and maybe other scooters?) I will be happy to help where I can on that front. I'm very experienced with mechanics and have years of experience working on bikes. So whilst my intro to this site has begun with the announcement of selling my Tmax, it's just beginning :-)

To be honest, I was always disappointed with the lack of info with the amount of self maintenance info on the web for the Tmax. I have the workshop manuals so I had no surprises, but it's not like owning other bikes. Or was I looking in the wrong places?!

Thanks

Hi Pikey

I am in the South! But thanks for the tip :-). I reckon you should be asking more if your Tmax if it is in a clean, standard condition. I mean it. I've spent a few months looking at what people ask and what they finally get/go for. They are good bikes (sorry, scooters - scooter seems a little derogatory for such a capable machine!).I'm not in a hurry and will use both bikes to make sure the Tmax continues to get used.

Unless you ride one you dont know how good they are and mk1's lot cheaper to run with cheaper tyres carbs so no expensive electricals no imobiliser to go wrong bit less power bit more fuel but it evens out cost wise and they can be economical if your easy on the throttle clutch is ace as well lot smother than dry clutch proper solid scooter .Easy to self service .If your obsessed with reg plates and mileage depreciation then dont bother with an older one but they wont drop below £1200 even with £50 K on the clock. To be honest dont want to sell but have 2 scoots just had it motd and its still only 20k on miles so giving it a try now before mileage racks up it will be sorned in september anyway when insurance is up .By the way some of us in German tmax group they are well up on the tmax all models and speak english so just post in english just google tmaxgroup.de say Clive sent you hes a regular on there

that statment made me happy as mine is high milages. :)
It is the only tmax I have ridden so I have nowt to compare with, still it will do just over 100 indicated, fuel eco quite good, off the lights - no worries.
Mine has 53k on it, new cam chain tensioner, regular oil and filter, what are these scooters good for in total miles traveled?

Hi Pikey

I think we agree. The Tmax was able to much more than I expected. On the motorway it'll cruise we'll over the limit with more ease than I bet most people would imagine. Certainly caught me by surprise (I did 135k on an ST1100 so I have ridden the alternative). Funny what you say about the 'low tech' nature of te earlier models and being able to maintain them yourself. That's in part why I opted for the old Beemer, it's like a giant mechano kit, which I can fix. One detail which threw me over the edge to he the Beemer was road humps...I'm surrounded by them where I live and I felt it was slowly being killed by them. There's little difference if you go over them at 10mph or 40mph so no 'reward' for slowing down (as if 25-30mph was ever 'fast'!
Oh, one good/bad point about the Tmax is te motor os well protected as its nestled inside the bodywork. Mine looks almost new! But a bummer to reach and get inside if needed (thankfully I never had to!).

From what i read, you sound more like trying to justify not selling the tmax instead of trying to get rid of it :) come onnnn you know you'll miss it.

Well, I have to say Halfabusa (love the name btw :-) you have half a point. With all this flippin rain I do really miss the casual/built-in weather protection. You get much much wetter in the Beemer... I also miss that huge luggage space under the seat, out of site and very useful. But those humps no longer matter now...
