Re: Vespa GT200
Hi monty, no...I haven't ridden both. I'm going by what my neighbour says about his GTS250 compared to his old GT200 (which he just sold for a small fortune), and by the back to back test carried out by T&G who reckon the 250 is much faster in the mid range and has a higher top end too. I can't see any advantage in buying the 200 over the 250...250 is same money or slightly less than the 200, with better performance overall. It's going to be a younger bike too. But it's a personal choice and there are many reasons for wanting to buy a bike that don't just depend on performance and maintenance issues. I know there are no actual issues with maintenance with either bike, but the injection system makes everything so easy. If an injector fails (a rare occurrence) you just replace it. They cost peanuts and it's no different to replacing a spark plug in reality.monty9120 wrote:have you ridden both? i have had many a 200 thats as quick as a 250 standard. just depends reallyData wrote:Again, just my two bobs worth and with acknowledgement to the above. If you buy the 250 it will far exceed the performance of the 200 anyway so tuning may be completely unnecessary depending on what you want. The fuel injection systems are trouble free and maintenance free, don't need setting up like a carb, and it doesn't wear out like a carb (throttle body wear accepted after millions of miles and not much different to a carb in that respect I guess). It'll only cost you pretty much the same as the 200 as well, and be a younger scoot with maybe less problems. If you want to fit an aftermarket performance pipe you can and it's sooooo...easy to set up the fuel injection to accommodate the new pipe. It can be very much trial and error with carbs. I spent years with carbs on bikes messing about tuning them. Since injection came on the scene, it's heaven. You can map both the injection system and ignition with massive ease to get her just right. But, if it's the 200 you are after for vintage type reasons then that's good enought and go for it! But the 250 is superior in lots of ways and very easy to look after. It'll cost you less in the long run too.
the 250 is smoother, to be honest not alot extra goes wrong so i wouldnt worry unless the injector packs up
oh my first runner 200 had over 60000 on the clock. i never had an issue with the carb or the throttle at all. it helps to use a scoot often enough i suppose. i dont even think i ever took it off to clean
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Re: Vespa GT200
I'm sorry but you can't use riding with a club as a comparison on out performing a larger CC'd scooter, I went on a rideout yesterday with a few GT and GTS owners on my Mana 850, they all kept up with me because the rule of club riding is you go as fast as your slowest member.andyscooter wrote:i havent ridden both but ride with a club and my gt200 keeps up and outperformes most 250/300 scoots on the run

Good though the GT200 is, every test I've ever read that compares it to even the GTS250 says it's slower. You only have to look at the power output for hp and torque to realise that. The only way for you to be convinced is to do a full bore off the road acceleration and top speed test. But that's no good if yours is now tuned. But I'm not putting down the GT200, it is an iconic scooter marking the change to scooters with real power without tuning.

Why not make things simple and get a 300 which is better than both 200 and 250

Re: Vespa GT200
Sold the other half's GT200 for a Grand last year, had owned it since 2004. The 300 isn't really worth the extra money imo, being no more quicker top end than the 250.
A 250 can be picked up nowadays from 1600 - 2500, 200s for a lot less. Haven't seen a 300 below 2400 yet.
