My XEvo 400 might be available . Brilliant scoot and right on the power limit for restricted licence, I'm just not likely to be using it much any more and don't want it to depreciate any more.

Well, one thing to remember that if you have buy a Tmax and restrict it, when your 2 years are up, you can easily unrestrict it, and have all the bhp that Mr Yamaha intended. If you buy a Maj 400, if you want more power after 2 years, you''ll have to ditch it and buy something else. There again, if after 2 years you decide you want to join the power rangers and buy a BMW1000RR, then of course, an unrestricted TMax won't do at all!!!
IMHO the TMax is a much better scooter in most ways, though possibly more expensive to run, so I'd personally go for the restricted Tmax option (not withstanding the legal farce of proving your scoot is restricted or otherwise)

Firstly, thanks for your replies folks - I've already learnt more than I knew before, never a bad thing.
I have absolutely no intention of breaking any laws or misleading my insurance company or the police - I genuinely wanted to know the practical issues surrounding restricting a bigger scooter and whether it was a sensible and cost effective direction to take although it may be that money and availability become more decisive factors in my decision - the NE doesn't seem awash with scooters of the types I would be looking for.
As a bit of aside this is completely different to where I am now - on holiday in Spain where scooters are universally used especially in Valencia where there are thousands of them, mostly 125s of various breeds but ridden by all types - seeing a very feminine girl, a macho Spanish boy racer and a more mature 'city gent' all get onto scooters after leaving work shows us that perhaps we still have a little way to go in their acceptance in Blighty - but that's another story

you're right about that, a couple of mates of mine always take the piss because I bought a scooter instead of a motorbike. Calling me a woman because I haven't bought a crotch rocket, I wanted practicality and ease of use having not ridden a motorbike since I was 17 (41 now). It goes quick enough for me and I like riding it so i couldn't give a flying fart what they think!

persoanlly i'd go for the burgman 400 rather than the majesty,on running costs ,suzuki IS chaeper to run than yamaha. not sure why but yamaha's are stupid price's ..don't get me wrong if i had the money i'd love another tmax..but there just out pricing tham selves.
an for me starting fresh ,i'd be more incline to get a 250/300 there plenty quick enough.. an like my sym gts 300 very comfy,very good on fuel, an most of all cheap to run.which these days is a bonus..
one example of prices, i wanted to put a genuine rear mudguard on my tmax ( as someone had cut it off really short ,an you get mud all up your back when it rains,stupid idea.) so asked for a price..over £150...An when i had to replace the same size rear mudguard on my SYM after someone drove into me cracking it..the price was £50 ..thats over £100 cheaper for the same thing ..so for me things like that would be a concideration,

The tmax was the one I bought straight after passing my Test and I had a restrictor kit put on as part of the deal. I had a 125 Piaggio x8 before that, a big 125 scoot but everywhere at full throttle as per most 125's. The tmax even with the restrictor was a whole different ball game, and as mentioned many times is a great handling and fun machine to ride. even with the kit, its very quick off the lights etc, and the top end improves nicely when the kit is removed.(only washers as mentioned). For me, the tmax is the must have scoot, and whilst other scoots may better it in some areas, as a fun allrounder its hard to beat at present.IMHO. Good luck with your scootering
