I've been searching the tinterweb, where does it say 50cc bike/scooters are restricted to 30mph? I've known BOG STANDARD Gilera Runner 50's sit at 40mph and I know for a fact that they were BOG STANDARD.

In most countries, the legal driving age for a moped is lower than for regular motorcycles and cars. Mopeds are typically restricted to 50 km/h (30 mph) from a maximum displacement of 49 cc , May I bring the dury's attention to the word that begins with 'T' between 'are' and 'restricted', does not mean that they are.

Edit: Did you bother to read down as far as 'Sports Moped'?

Sports mopeds were ostensibly 50 cc motorcycles, capable of doing more than 50 mph in some cases.

Further Edit: I read further down and stand corrected. But I still want to see a BOG STANDARD Gilera Runner 50 or Italjet Dragster do 30mph at full throttle PMSL!

Most common I see on there is 50cc's bored to 70cc but kept as 50cc on the V5.
Or 125cc's bored to 172cc, Gilera runners and Italjet dragsters being the most common
and of course kept as 125cc's on the V5.

I personally would not buy or ride such machine that hasn't been properly registered.

What I wonder though with 50cc is most these days are quite capable of doing 40-50mph. But
are they all restricted at the factory for certain markets or whilst at the dealers? I know SYM
50cc's shouldn't be derestricted until the first 300km service.

See my Italjet Dragster started off as a 125 when new, but ended up as a 190cc and registered as such.

Standard 50cc mopeds are capable of well over 30mph but are restricted for certain markets due to legislation. That's why the restriction is so easy to remove.
If you are over 17 and have a full car licence you don't need to ride a restricted 50cc nor do you need L plates as long as it's insured as such and you don't even need a CBT until you want to do your test, then you need one. If you are only 16 then it has to remain restricted to 30mph.
I started off with a 50cc non restricted Aerox that previously belonged to a policemans wife and it would do about 45 mph. I fitted a polini variator, exhaust and a 70cc kit and it did barely 50mph down hill so a complete waste of money really for what little gain was made. Still PM Tuning made lots of money out of me for a while. It remained 50cc on the log book although when traded in I did inform the dealer of all the mods made and supplied all the original parts so they could refit if required.

Dave, even with car licence you are only allowed to ride a restricted 'ped with no L plates. If you desrestrict its then a motorcycle and then the requirement of the CBT and L plates come in.

You guys should do an eBay search for Vespa PX. Nearly every one has a kit of some sort fitted but still registered as a 125. In the trad world that is a big selling point as nobody wants a standard 125, they all want one with 150, 166 or 180 kits.

Doesn't make it right and I'd hold them with the same regard as the kids and destricted peds. These people are older and should know better.
