I am a big Gilera fan but if it was my money i would go for the T-max due to the problems the Gp owers have had and still do. reliability of the gp is not good and very expensive to maintain.

I've never owned either machine but have ridden the T-max. It was great and I'm an ex big bike owner too. I have the Burgman 400 which is also a great machine. In your position I would probably go with the T-max as it is a better known quantity, reliable and fun. You can get all the parts with great ease for any T-max with good dealer support. And as Grumpy says...not something you may always find with Aprilia. So unless you want outright full throttle power of the GP800, go with Yamaha would be my advice. Oh...one other thing, if you do your own maintenance, go for the T-max. It's like the Burgman or similar in it's simplicity with just a tad more work needed to do some of the engine out stuff. But it's not hard.

A 08 tmax (Ithink thats a mk 4 ??)) at around £4000 with 12,000 miles
or
A 08 gp at £3,600 with 12,000 miles ..

?????????????????????????
An 08 is probably a mk3 (though there were a load of mk2s that were dumped on the market after the mk3 was announced, so could be a mk2). Mk4 came out in 2012.
Can you tell me what the main difference between the mk3 and 2?
As I understand it the Mk2 has a steel chassis, the Mk3 has alloy chassis and a sharper set of clothes. Both are well respected machines and performance and handling are very similar.

If it was me I would have the Tmax all day long without hesitation. Such a lovely thing and beautifully built. My Gilera has been good so far but I dont expect to last anything like the yam.

Interesting question...they look very similar, but are totally different! The panels are quite different, and the chassis is entirely different. However, the engine and transmission are more or less exactly the same. The differences are mostly in the suspension - the mk3 has bigger front forks and bigger brakes, and a 15" front wheel, a slightly bigger fuel tank, slightly more economy, and annoying seat that is rear hinged rather than front hinged. To ride...well, they are both Tmaxs, but feel a bit different. The mk2 is slightly softer in some ways, whilst the mk3 is sportier - if you like the mk2 is Sports-touring, whilst the mk3 is more sports...though still pretty comfortable. The mk3 's ride is a bit firmer, whilst the mk2 could ride big bumps like a limo, but could be uncomfortable on some surfaces.

Iv'e got my Gts of which I absolutely love and is superb for running around town ,but I want a bigger scoot for a few more longer trips..
I'm still sat on Internet looking at different reviews for both scoots and my heart is saying get a tmax but I keep going back to the gp for sheer grunt but the size and handling does worry me .. I do all my own work on my scoots and am quite mechanically minded, all I worry about on the gp is things I hear about it cutting out on pull off's etc when if intermittent and possibly electrical can be a nightmare..
I need someone to tell me something that will help me make my mind up as my sleeps starting to suffer :?

IF you read these post and on other forums the T Max, is for more reliable than the gp,
which seem to get problems that are very hard to fix ,and my local dealer did say to be very careful if buying one,
of the two i would go for the T Max without any doubt
