i agree with poldark: The clutch issues were well documented and seemed to effect a lot of the early (new) models, or they got reported a lot and gave that impression, so ask specifically if the clutch bell has been replaced as I'm pretty sure Suzuki issued a revised part.
this was the only problem the early burgers had .. iv'e owned two , they are a fantastic scooter..and as pikey said in the first post..rear brake isn't a clutch...and your left foot wants to change gear...lol.. but you soon get used to it..
Good friends don't let you do stupids thing alone .

Go look at it and test ride. I was going to buy a 62 reg 400 with only 34 miles local to me for only 3999. The seller put his Burgman 650 in for a Bmw then after getting home realised his mistake. He wanted to reverse the deal but his 650 had been sold near instantly and they had a brand new 400 they could deal, so he did. Geuss what, he wanted a Burgman 650 again, so put it instantly up for sale. Two weeks prior i had just bought a 58 Burgman 400 otherwise i would have had it. Anyway its still available, however he traded it for an older 05 B650 and it still advertised but at a higher price? Look at ebay 261131638103 (sorry no link using a tablet ebay app).

Thanks for the replies guys. Guess I need to do more research on eBay then. Seems this may well be overpriced or come with concerns over lack of use.

Some really nice examples you've shown me. My budget is really around the 3.5k mark though and the one that sits in that price range is 5 hours away. Still it gives me how that something more local will show up soon. I don't buy many bikes so was hoping a dealer would provide some security, not bought any thing of this value off eBay either. If anyone does spot some great buys - pref K8/9's for 3.5k ish in the Bath/Bristol area please let me know. :-)

The one I posted in Chichester would be well worth following up, at least talk with the owner as he states FSH and will accept offers so might well get it for closer to 2.5k and it's not that far to travel.

They're inherently reliable scoots so saving 1k is well worth exploring - perhaps a nearby Muppet would be able to take a look for you??

How far is that from Pennsylvania? ;)

Well the saving may just cover your air fare, but I suspect we may find a slightly nearer volunteer, but don't let that stop you from offering again!!

Hi Vimesy, most of what needs to be said has been! But I would make sure it's the 2007+ 399cc version and not the K6 385cc model. Both are good but I would recommend the 399cc version as it has some nice mods and is more powerful and economical, and easier to service. I would share some minor concerns about the bikes lack of miles. That really doesn't mean it's a good one, but it could be if it's been stored right (dry warm conditions) and ridden at the correct intervals ie: not left for a year then ridden once for a few miles then stored again and not ridden for ages. That's the worst way to treat any bike or car. Problems you may get with a low mileage bike like that is mostly leaking seals from the engine and forks. The seals dry out and shrink even some seals in the engine. This has obvious consequences and can be expensive to fix. Also the coolant should have been changed too and any hoses that may be perishing. Even when not being used these things must be done or you will get trouble. You would need to know the oil has been changed at regualar intervals even though it hasn't been used much.

When riding, the bike should be smooth and vibration free, the brakes are first class and should stop her smoothly and quickly. Engine pick up should be pretty quick especially in the mid range with a top speed around the 92-95mph mark, although don't try that unless you are on private roads and are confident with your control of the bike. There is easy cruising at 70-75mph or faster if you are in a real hurry. The bike should handle without any glitches, ie: steering smoothly, suspension soaking up the bumps without crashing over them and no wobbles. They handle well much like a good motorcycle so yours should too. Economy will vary but if you stay around the 60mph area it should manage somewhere between 74-78mpg depending on your riding technique, wind direction and state of service of the bike, and roads you are riding on. I have one, the 400z abs. I can manage 80+mpg easily with a best of 87mpg by not going over 58mph on 'A' roads. Yeah...I know, I'm a bit anal about the mpg's. Well it passes the time of day seeing if I can beat my last highest figure!! And yeah...I'm nuts!! :o

As for the bike itself. The Burgman pedigree is phenominal. The 400 has been in production for 15 years and sold around the world. A good commuter or tourer or weekend blaster believe it or not! An unburstable machine which can be flogged mercilessly day in and day out. They are marvelous. I'm an engineer and ex-tech and can tell you they are very simple to work on and well designed. You can do most things on it yourself with a few basic tools if you are inclined. There are dozens of online videos to show you how to do virtually anything to the bike. If you haven't done your own stuff before, this is an ideal bike to learn on. The clutch issue that was apparent in the early 2007+ models (these are the 399cc engines) is sorted and Suzuki brought out a new clutch for it which included new drum and a new engine case and cooler for the transmission. If you buy the one you speak of make sure it has been modified to the later spec by the dealer as it is a factory mod that should have been carried out. £3700 is way too much for this bike even if it's in perfect condition IMHO, as you can buy younger bikes for less money, but with marginally more miles probably, but for less money. One of our number recently bought a 2010 or 2011 for under £3k from a dealer with just 2500 miles on the clock. This is not uncommon so keep looking if in doubt about this bike you are looking at. Good luck and keep us all posted if you will as to what you are going for. And...ask as many questions about your prospective purchase as you like. There are many more on this site that know more than me about the Burgman 400 so use our collective knowledge. We don't bite!
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Been riding for 55 years & owned too many bikes to list here...

Thanks again guys, you've been more helpful than I could possibly have hoped for.

I'm gonna take the dealers scoot out on Saturday just to get a feel for the bike and 100% make sure it's the scoot for me (can't see why it wouldn't be). I'm also going to give the guy in Chichester a ring to have a chat and see if it's worth me catching a train down there for.

This site has lot's of info on the Burgman 400 models.

http://www.suzukicycles.org/Burgman-ser ... gman.shtml

The K7 is of course a new model whilst the K6 has a smaller engine. The most obvious difference by just
looking is the K7+ has twin discs up front whilst the K6 and prior models are single disced.

The only common issue as already mentioned with (some of) the K7 & K8 models was with the clutch.

Have to admit though i'd be wary of a near 6 year old bike with such low mileage. It'll probably need new tyres,
for i've heard that they should be changed every six years, even if barely used. Along with other things
that'll need checking & possibly replacing it could end up costing you more than one with higher mileage.
By higher mileage, I mean even one in good cosmetic condition with 10,000 miles would be more appealing.

The K7 and upwards models have the later 399cc DOHC Engine, the earlier is a 385cc SOHC engine :)
