Re: My New Yamaha XMax400...
Paul, congrats on the scoot, hope it's going well. I would not worry about your valve adjustment. Because it's bucket and shims it's unlikely it will need adjustment. But as long as you check them to make sure, you should be fine. I haven't worked on the Xmax of any flavour but if you do have to pop the cams, that too should be very easy I would think. These modern scoots are much better maintenance wise now. It is on the Burgmans with the dohc motors. And the valves rarely ever need adjusting either. I have done a couple of very high mileage Burgman 400's, 07 & 08 70,000 & 83,000 miles respectively for a friend and an acquaintance and it didn't take long to remove cams and set everything up. It is by far the easiest bike I've worked on.XMax400Paul wrote:Some more servicing info and thoughts...
So major service costs is gonna be belt and rollers @ 12k / 2 yrs-ish and the valve check/adjust (shim under bucket - so cams out) @ 24k miles / 4 yrs-ish...
[Edit: Might have a go myself although its been a while - 1000 exup head with 5 valves per pot - that was 20 shims to measure...]
Re your fuel consumption. I reckon it should improve as the engine loosens and becomes more powerful. It won't fully peak until 5-6k miles anyway when you should then be getting the best power and mpg's that the bike is capable of. There is a tendency to use the extra power though and not notice the extre mpg's.
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Re: My New Yamaha XMax400...
First service done at 615 miles the other week...
Oil and Filter, and the Transmission oil - plus the standard impress for the oil disposal and consumables (oilly rag, soap, tea, biscuits etc)
So now using a little more of the twist grip and the needle seeing the 6 more often, rather than just passed the 4... now on 800 miles... they are meant to be good-to-go from 1000 miles...
Few more fill ups and been keeping a log... seen anything from 62 up to 69 - and its averaging out at 65 mpg - not the 80 mpg of the 250 but hey!
Smaller numberplate fitted - nothing stupid - just an inch or so smaller each way - font is about the same - as its a '13' plate the top line is quite short with the '1'... kept catching the edge of the plate with my leg trying to get round the scoot in a cluttered garage - and it looks a bit better, but it's still looks like its got a fat arse!
Gonna do a oil and filter change (to fully Synthetic) and re-do the Tx while im at it...
@ 1,500 miles, just to be sure the oil is clean - Then again at 3,000 and every 3000 onwards ala service intervals
May do the filter every 3k as well rather than at 6k - for the sake of a couple of quid
Waiting to give it a good clean, and give the plastics a good coating - but its been way to hot / direct sunlight etc,
Talking of plastics - they are way thinner and no where near as substantial feeling as the old 250, not sure what the newer 250 was like... - especially the textured parts - trim, center tunnel etc...
Use has mainly been commuting - but gonna get out for a ride down the lanes soonish - usually take the CCM though when it gets a chance!
When i was out on the CCM the other W/E I saw another XMax400 in grey at the BP Station bottom of Biggin Hill/Westerham - and said Hi, Bloke had covered 1000 miles and was getting similar mpg - he had come from a 650 Burger and was enjoying the Xmax's agility...
More Ramblings latter...

Re: My New Yamaha XMax400...
Paul, everything sounds like it's going swimmingly. If I may make a suggestion...and it's only that because it's your bike and you can do what you want to do...but personally, I would avoid the fully synthetic oil until around the 6k mark. You engine won't finish conforming (fully running in!) until around then. It's the same for virtually all mid to larger size four stroke engines. To some degree this mileage may vary slightly depending on how the bike is used and how you ride it. Fully synthetic will not enable the engine to finish conforming and you may eventually end up using oil as more miles go on her. It's a common problem on engines not designed to use fully syn from new when owners switch to fully syn much too early. Burgman 400's should only have it in from 5- 6k too. Fully syn is so good at reducing engine wear to virtually zero that it stops the engine fully running in if used too early. I can send you an interesting article written by someone who is an engine scientist if you are interested which covers this very point. Let me know if you are interested.

Hiya Paul, if you don't mind me asking, how does the seating/positioning feel compared to the old 250? Are the handlebars/screen set away from you, like the majesty or tmax? Its just I was sat on a tmax the other week & couldn't get away with the size of it.

Re: My New Yamaha XMax400...
Seating position... a bit higher and more leg room than the old 250, still not feet forward-comfy though - similar to the newer 250 from what I can remember after a brief sit on-in a dealership... handle bars and screen are set away - may well be similar to the new 250 - as the old 250's top part bar and screen were all one - that turned - the later 250 had bars that turned within the screen / top fairing...tallpaul wrote:Hiya Paul, if you don't mind me asking, how does the seating/positioning feel compared to the old 250? when i first saw the scoot, my first thoughts were, i wonder how long the exhaust would last
it also seemed a tad too long
but im sure will be of good quality, with new scoots these days , it seems to be about storage, so either they show the filters on the sides or they get enveloped in plastic fairings.. a good stance or arse.. will be a good view from a following vehicle point of view regarding safety
