Modern maxi`s , (which I would classify as 250 cc and over with CVT transmission.) I think originated with the Honda CH & CN models. If memory serves me, Yamaha brought out the 250 Majesty, and Honda the 250 Foresight about 1997, Suzuki entered the fray in1999 with the 250 Burgman, soon followed by the 400cc model. However, larger engine scoots have been around since the 1950`s, Maicoletta, Velocette, BSA/Triumph, and D.K.R. all made large (for the time) engine scooters.

Even before that, back in the 1890's there were big engined step throughs in production

1921 Ner-a-car fully auto hub centre steering step through was in production in the US and UK

I wonder if any have done Lands end John on groats got 3 doing it next year hoping to set UK record for number of Honda Helix in John on groats at one time lol

I was adding to Hexatony's other point that "larger engine scoots have been around since the 1950`s" and should have quoted it. The Germans were producing a 1500cc step through back in the 1890's.

I remember when the Yamaha Majesty 250 came out in 1996 http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/1965356/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It seemed to be when the Maxi's really took off as being really popular. It was the biggest selling scooter in Italy for a few years in a row from memory. I nearly bought a new one in Australia in about 1998, but eneded up spending my money on something else.
