The OP didn't specify the location of his parked scooter; there are neither 'passers-by' nor trees exuding sticky stuff in the courtyard of the flats in which I live. Seagulls would have to mimic Harrier jump-jets in the Falklands if they wanted to score hits on my scooter as it's parked very close to the wall of the building. I answered within the bounds of my experience.

So surprisingly NOT under a cover, and open to all of the elements seems to be the best way to go.

I can imagine that road salt is its worst enemy, so regular washing appears on the cards. Thanks for replies.

I think Data's advice about Waxol or ACF50 along with regular washing especially to remove salt is the best.
I think also it's worth covering the seat with a sheet of plastic though as we all know what it's like sitting down on a wet seat.
Some people will recall the X9s were fitted with a 'shower-cap' as standard to keep the seat dry.
