You should make the final connection to the vehicle with the flat battery. When you make the final battery connection you get a spark as the connection is made. If any of the batteries have excess sulphuric acid gas about them, this spark could ignite the gas and cause an explosion. Making the final connection away from the battery prevents this.michaelphillips wrote:just for safety really, as someone may have it running before applying the jump leads and the scoot switched on, its suprising what some folk do, save you blowing fuses on the scoot, the cranking amps of a car battery is way over the cranking amps needed for a scooter so dont need to be boosted like you do car to car..Gerard C wrote:For a numpty, why not have the car motor running when jump starting a scoot?
and the jumping leads put Positive on first good battery then flat battery car +.... then negative on good battery then fit the negative to the flat battery car on the engine metal, eg engine block etc (everyone sticks it on the negative battery terminal) dont know whats the differencethen reverse order when taking off
I was very lucky many years ago when I did just that - I made the last connection to a battery that was behind the passenger seat of a Morris J4 van. The van also had a faulty regulator so had been overcharging the battery resulting in plenty of gas being present. There was a loud bang and all six battery caps were blown off the battery and were ricocheting around the cab of the van. I was dead lucky not to get one of them or any acid on my face/in my eyes.
Oh, and if the good vehicle is running when you make the connection and you get the connection wrong, you could damage the alternator of the running vehicle.
