could the belt have been the wrong one, eg the different years of the scoot k5 etc might have slight difference in length they may have put on a later engined belt, was the numbers checked on the belt for the year of scoot? as you mentioned slightly lower revs etc it would seem a slightly longer belt, as if the belt was too tight it would be slightly higher revs, i would look into that also, as if it was a longer belt it would run on casing when slackening on the pulleys, id give this a look and find the right belt number http://www.bike-parts-suz.com/index.php
i found on the above microfiche's that the K5 whether model E2 OR E28 WAS BELT NUMBER 27601-15F10-000 NOT SURE, BUT THIS NUMBER SHOULD BE SHOWN ON THE BELT USUALLY

Re: Burgman 400 early belt wear
Gerard, I've just pm'd you. I hadn't seen this thread due to not being on the puter very much in the last day or two. Some good ideas here. It's probably just due to the fact it's a non Suzuki belt. Suzy belts cost about £150+ depending where you buy them. They are the best and last a long time. All the other usually don't last as long and I've heard of early failures. Not seen any of the things micheal is mentioning but that doesn't mean it couldn't be something like that.
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

The correct price for a Genuine K7+ Suzuki belt is about £160. I bought the next best thing if not the same, a quality Gates branded belt for £70 delivered from a Suzuki dealer called Jim Allen in Falkirk, Scotland.

Re: Burgman 400 early belt wear
i was just elaborating on what i would look for after 2000 miles
the suzi belt number changes in 2006 when they also changed the roller weight
mainly because of the big changes to the model from 2006 the 2005 K5 belt has a different part number from K6 onwards belts
BELT NUMBER 27601-15F10-000 for the 2005
27601-05H00-000 2006 K6 onwards belt number
so may be slighty longer or wrong belt fitted if they were not up on the changes

Richard this comment is from the Burgman USA site!
Speedometer indicated 71 MPH @7,000 RPM with old belt. New belt 6,200 RPM and 70 MPH. Rollers had flattened areas. Belt width was below specs.

I brought a mk1 burger never looked at belt till had done 2000 miles .I was going to Scotland and it had hair line cracks and was selling after trip so brought a three five two belt which was same fitted to it .£18 off eBay on assumption had already done 2000 miles so no reason new one wouldn't do 2000 miles .Jaz uses same on helix just changes at half normal miles .They are made in Tawain .

Re: Burgman 400 early belt wear
After taking the bike to the mechanics today to check the new belt after 600 miles it's not good news. The belt is already starting to wear down and I've been told it's a ticking time bomb to another snap.
I've been advised to try and locate the engine number on the burg, would anybody be able to help locate it?
I'm hoping sizuki will have a possible solution, mabye the wrong size belt for the bike?
If anybody has any other comments that would be great.
I appreciate everyone's help so far.
Thank you.

Re: Burgman 400 early belt wear
Check both variator and clutch pulleys very carefully ie, remove them from the bike. The tinniest mark in the face can course the belt to go in no time at all..Also check to see if any spacers that MAY need to be fitted are in the correct places,. I had a Majesty that chucked it's belt in 300miles the clutch faces were knackered, as in been welded back together after a belt snap...
