There are some funny you tube videos of bicycles left as bait, when anyone sits on the saddle, the saddle slips down the tube allowing the pointy tip to go through with amusing effect.
Research carrying on.
I really like that one!

Nothing like severe pain as a deterrent!

I suppose you can only do so much. It really grates on me, I doubt mainland Europe have to put up with the theft epidemic we seem to experience here.
I live in south east Spain, and can say that motorbikes I see at big events around here are, in the main, never locked up.
The top 10 stolen powered two wheelers in the country are:
1. Honda SH125/150 (Scoopy)
2. Yamaha T-Max
3. SYM Symphony
4. KYMCO Super Dink
5. Honda PCX 125/150
6. Piaggio Liberty 125
7. Kawasaki Z900
8. Honda Vision 110
9. Yamaha X-Max 125/250
10. KTM Duke 125/390
Note that only two are motorbikes, the rest scooters. Most stolen scooters I believe end up in Morocco and Algeria.

I think scooters are popular with joyriders because they are lightweight to push away and being automatic easy to ride.
