You could be ½ litre short on on fill up and ¼ litre short on the next, and basing your calculations on that.
It`s quite simple....you divide how far you`ve gone by how much fuel you used doing so.

It doesn`t matter one jot how much the tank was or wasn`t filled.
And regardless of what fraction of a litre you did or didn`t get in one fuelling session versus another you can see clearly on the pump readout or on your till receipt how many litres you put in.

Then....as out Merkin cousins are prone to saying...."You do the math".
I`d only waste my money if I didn`t spend it all on my bikes.

I think you two are talking about different things. Tarka is right in saying it's easy to log how much you put in at the pump and how far it gets you and work out mpg from that, whereas you're talking about how far a full tank will get you which is a bit more tricky as you'd have to completly empty it and refill to the brim each time to have a fair/accurate comparison.

Tank range and MPG are both important, though not neccesarily linked - eg you couldhave a high mpg scoot with a tiny tank and range or a low mpg scoot with a large tank and longer range.

MY rough equation.

15 litres of fuel and 180 miles done when filled up.

15 divide by 4.555 = 3.29 galons

180 divided by 3.29 = mpg

This gives you the mpg on fill up putting approximately same fuel in each time.

IT's not an exact science anyway.

I've just completed a 1890 mile round trip from Essex to Monaco via Switzerland and Italy. Constant 90 - 102 mph on motorways (true satnav speed, not the optomistic Suzuki speedo reading) plus caning it it power mode round the mountains. Bigger than standard windshield, top box, fully loaded under the seat, rear seat bag with a fat(ish) bastard riding it. I averaged just 39 mpg.
Paddle harder. I can hear banjo music!

As my signature recorded with Fuelly. Majority local solo riding around town area (not many traffic issues) with the occasional dual carriageway. My last fill up was worst at only 48mpg and a best of 58mpg.

I think Im the same as Steve_D, cane it all the time 70 in 30 limits, race cars and anything else, always get up to at least 90 ( 104mph yesterday ) on the short 3 mile trip to work.
I think I saw 160 miles on a long motorway trip before I filled up, but usually its about 120 miles when the bar flashes at me,
Where's the fun in goin slow ;) Ok its less likely to get points on ur license and put yourself in danger, but you dont get that big grin on yer face if you dont try ;)
I can tell that some here, just get off the bike and walk away when they finish a ride, and not look back at the bike and think, wow that was good ;)
