That's not much worse damage than my XEvo had in Feb. when I had my fall.
Chips Away* http://chipsaway.co.uk/ did the repair for £125. If none of the panels are cracked, get Chips Away* to visit and give you a quote (these are free) before thinking of new panels. You can't tell that mine has been on it's side now (the £125 also included a scrape on the other side when I scuffed a wall parking it at work...).

that kind of damage could easily be caused again, its not worth going though insurance, the only reason I can see for getting it fixed would be if you were going to sell it on or you hate having battle scars.

Yeah - check out the cosmetic repair people. I'm sure they could fix those scratches very easily and you'd never know anything had happened, probably for less than your excess with no bovver with insurance companies.
I imagined from your description that the damage had been far worse!!!!

If you drop a heavy bike turn the handlebars on full lock . Now turn your back to it and bend your knees so you lower yourself down and can grab the handlebar* behind you and soem part of the rear of the bike that is strong. Now use your legs to push upwards. Your legs are much stronger than your arm and back and this is the best way to lift a heavy bike.

*You dont have to use the handlebar but body work can flex and crack.

The damage looked much worse originally, particularly to the front panel. I was amazed at how many of the scuffs and scrapes just polished out with some elbow grease. Cosmetic repair wasn't something I'd even considered. So now I have a third option to think about . If I can get a free estimate then I guess it's definitely worth doing before I commit to a decision. I do hate battle scars though and the insurance route seems the most likely way to get things as good as new. Thanks for all the tips and advice.

If you can get a cosmetic repair, it'd be by far your best option IMHO. The bike & car cosmetic repairers can do some pretty impressive things, so check it out.

if you go the insurance route they may write it off not allowing you to buy bike and giving you less than you think it is worth.

I went and took a look at the replacement front panel on sale at my local Yamaha dealer. It was a perfect colour match and virtually brand new - not a mark on it! So for £50 I snapped it up. I'll just keep my eye on ebay now for the small black side-panel and the belly pan can be touched up with some silver paint for the time being. Going to drop the insurance claim.

Sounds good - though I'd visit a cosmetic repair place as well, to see what they can do and for how much.
