Maybe so, until you have a accident with one of these ped's or scooters and you find they are virtually uninsured.

Every new moped is restricted to 30 mph in the UK. We've had this outdated law for years. So if you are 16 you can only legally ride a moped. Alter or de-restrict and you no longer have a legal machine unless you are 17 and have informed your insurance company.Meldrew wrote:Old gits of a certain age will remember the similar outlandish performance claims made by spotty youths riding the Yamaha FS1E 50cc "Sixteener Special" sports moped of the 1970's. Owners of "Fizzies" would regularly write to the Letters page of MCN claiming that their 50cc two-stroke moped could do 60 or 70+ mph, when in reality it struggled to get past 40mph.
The thing is a 150 or 166cc kitted PX still has less HP than something like a Piaggio X8 125 so really the laws should be about power rather than the cc's.mottza wrote:Maybe so, until you have a accident with one of these ped's or scooters and you find they are virtually uninsured.

I'm pretty sure this isnt true. I didnt need L plates or a CBT when i rode a 50cc but thats because i passed my car test pre 2001, i think if you passed the test after that then you'd need to do a CBT and display L platesTmaX9 wrote:If you are over 17 and have a full car licence you don't need to ride a restricted 50cc nor do you need L plates as long as it's insured as such and you don't even need a CBT until you want to do your test
Ah yes you had the desirable DX model with disc brake & nicer paint scheme etc whereas I had the poverty version with drum brakesrichie the 1st wrote:Yep mine was a Yellow one with disc brake.Sold it for £100.If only we new now back then..Meldrew wrote:Old gits of a certain age will remember the similar outlandish performance claims made by spotty youths riding the Yamaha FS1E 50cc "Sixteener Special" sports moped of the 1970's.
