Re: Open face helmets
Due to some crash experiences I had in the past ( the last was about 2 months ago ) I ride only in full leather trim with protectors, think it it helped a lot that my bones are still in proper order.ridinhigh wrote:Thought idea of a scooter was so you didnt have to get all dressed up in full leathers and heavy full face helmets

Regarding helomets:
I tried several types of flipup, open face and full face helmets during the last four years.
Flipup were BMW, Schubert and Airoh - all of them too heavy for my taste and with a too tight viewing angle and bad vetilation
Open face were two different Louis Highway1 and a Scorpion Exo100 - the Louis were comfy but way too noisy and the EXO was only good for speeds below 40 mph, then the wind impact on my eyes became very uncomfortable and caused tearing eyes and eye inflammations ( they have only a short sun / clear visor )
Full face were Airoh, Diablo, Nolan, G-Mac and ZED. I must say that they suit me best. I feel safer with them than with open face helmets and I kept the ZED and Diablo at the end because they offer the widesst viewing angle and best airflow inside the helmet. Even at temparutes over 30 C they dont make me sweat and the wind noise is in an acceptable range also.
Most scooter riders here use either full face or flipup helmets where the flipup users are mainly elder riders.
The Helmets from Aldi and Lidl ( Crivit ) are pure crap, some I saw fell already apart when taken brandnew out of the box ( especially the sun visors and padding )

Re: Open face helmets
Wearing one or the other is down to the rider's personal choice, but wearing two helmets is a bit over-cautious and probably not very comfortable, I reckon.phantom309 wrote:personally i wear both open an full..i don't have a problem ,as said before each to there own..

Possibly because the wisdom that comes with age tells us we won't have to take the thing off every time we want to talk to someone, pass through Customs at borders, have a cigarette or even when entering some shops.

Re: Open face helmets
I use a flip-up as well. Although there are times I'd like to have a full face and open face combo. I'm 31 by the way.

Re: Open face helmets
This is like the topic on mountainbike forums that keeps coming up every few weeks to tedium, of 'should you wear a helmet?'
Those that dont get all pissy about it being their choice and nothing will stop you getting hurt if you hit a tree at 40mph, and the ones that do wear them say its essential safety kit that prevents head injuries.
How anyone gets so worked up over these types of topics is beyond me! do what you want and if you wear an open faced helmet and shag your face up then dont bleat about it, if you dont fall and dont shag your face up then keep smiling as you have your teeth in the right place!
I wear a full face because a mate fell off years ago and had his jaw hanging off and teeth pushed up into the gums! he was a right mess. Enough to put me off open face helmets.

Re: Open face helmets
I wear glasses as well, but rather have the inconvenience of taking them off to change the helmet than the weight and restricted vision in a flipup.Deeping wrote:jjprivate said "Most scooter riders here use either full face or flipup helmets where the flipup users are mainly elder riders."

Btw when a friend of mine recently had a crash with her scooter the Airoh 2000 flipup´s links broke while being stored in her topcase when the scooter crashed on the road. So I think regarding protection the links of a flipup are a weak point.
Here a photo from the ripped off topcase and broken Airoh helmet
