Having just been through the test thing with my Son. I can say it's near impossible to insure a large capacity scooter until you have passed your test. As a L plater you can't ride on a large capacity bike unless your under supervision. You can't get supervision unless it's from a recognised school. How could solo get to the test centre legally and take his test unless it's through a School. Secondly I've never heard such bull shit about the 650. It's heavy but with the right practice you can do anything on that bike. I did my IAM test on that machine and you simply drag the back brake on slow speed moves. Remarkably similar to the techniques we all use on a day to day basis. Well I do anyway.
Ride safe are a brilliant outfit. As a result of helping my Son through his test on a Burgman 400, Roger, the owner, went out and bought a 650 to provide a way of taking the test for the unlimited license. I hope any one who wants to go the auto route supports them.

changing the clutch springs would make the clutch fully engage immediately on revs the idea behind the dr pulley hit clutch is that as well as the standard springs, they also have pillow springs which lock onto the clutch bell so to speak, and you can change the spring setup to your needs,
Does not apply to the Burgman 650 they have an Electronic CVT :)

Meldrew-

no i cant take it on the Piaggio X9 250SL its below the test requirments, bascily for full unlimited CC licence you need to take test on a bike of 599cc and over, for the middle waight 33bhp bikes you must take test on a bike more than 399cc, they have Light licence / medium licence and a full licence. if i did it on a 125 i would be granted a light licence, thats no lplates can go on motorways and take pillion and have any bike up to 125cc.

So the X9250SL falls in to the dead zone of cc so cant be used, the burgman 650cc if used ( i am doing ) will grant me a full unlimted auto licence.

if taking test on a burgman 650, gets you a full auto licence

,then what do you use for a manual licence?.

Talking to a couple of mates one passed his bike test on a 197 James and other passed on a Ariel square four 1000cc,
i passed on a 500cc norton ES2,
and we all still have a bike but only two of us still ride,

auto licence----- ride any automatic you like
Maual licence--- ride any manual bike & automatic bike you like.

If with a FULL automatic licnece you want to ride a manula bike you will have to ride a manual bike as a learner, 125 and l-plates and CBT lol

So i could have a CBT and a 125 manual l-plate bike....roll in to the drive swap bike over and jump on a 650 automatic and take a passanger and shot down the mortorway lol ...well thats how it works with owning a Full auto licence, sucks but still lets you ride a manaul on learn

When I took my test, the bike I had at the time was a 125 Honda Pantheon which was just a cheap commuter bike for work. I just took the test so that I could ditch the L plates and carry a pillion if I wanted to. Plus my insurance would be cheaper. I never intended to go up from that. I took my test on a 125 geared bike though - it's hardly rocket science to use a clutch and gears so why restrict yourself - it's not any more expensive to learn or take a test on a geared bike, is it? After about a year I got a Honda SH300. Two years after passing my test it automatically allowed me to ride 'big bikes'. Got a Burgman 650, thinking I'd NEVER be interested in a geared bike. Earlier this year I chopped the Burgman in for a FJR 1300. Could never had done that if I'd took my test on an automatic. Have a go at me if you like but personally, I think that people who take tests in/on automatic cars or bikes lack the confidence and skill to drive/ride on the road and should consider whether they are fit to do so if dealing with a clutch and gears is too much for them. There, I said it!

Indeed you did. Do you normally like showing your ignorance so blatantly? Some take their test on an Auto because they have a disability which prevents them riding a geared bike, but hey, you know better don't you.

So sorry my OPINION doesn't agree with yours, Mr PC civil servant.

Seen plenty of car drivers with disabilities driving but then they have the security of four wheels, a protective shell around them, seat belts, airbags etc so fairly safe especially when the car had been specifically adapted for disabled use but disabled bike riders? That's a completely different proposition. I've never seen a bike adapted for disabled use.

Okay, are there any on here that are taking their auto test that have a disability that prevents them taking their test on a geared bike then?
