I never thought of that, the rollers are all in the same way and the belt is on the right way round? Sound like I'm taking the piss but there is a wrong and right way for the belt to go on.

Yes both belt & rollers are round the right way. I think there must be something inside the casings which has broken & is impeding the belt chewing it to bits but I can't see anything. Anyway I'll have a car again soon so will be able to take the nexus off the road & investigate further/properly at the moment I need it to get to work.

Just seen a engine on ebay for £500 from a 04 model.
