From this and the BBC article, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24361195" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , assuming no-one is injured at the start: the 4x4 driver should of slowed down (or stopped in lane) to give a safe breaking distance.

The first biker to get run over (brake checking?) looks more to me like he's slowing on purpose because the 4x4 is driving too fast, and looking at the 4x4 not the camera.

After that collision, the 4x4 would of been best served stopping and getting out - driving over more bikers just was never going to help, and arguably put his family in more danger.
I mean, is a 4x4 EVER going to outrun bikers? No. So why bother trying it...

Then it all just goes downhill from there.

The bikers were in the wrong also, as vigilante justice is wrong. They could of attended to their hurt, got the plates, and let the cops know what happened. Or chased, and done a citizen's arrest, but not beaten him up (minimum force to restrain).

But yes, before the video, if they had a rally, and didnt act like dicks, it might not have set things off either - but none of that is (probably) illegal. Once you start running people over - sorry no defence justifies that.
